CHAPTER 6 – THE CHOICE

Three days later, Sarah opened her eyes.

The first face she saw was Emma's.

The second was Matteo's.

She tried to speak.

No words came.

Only tears.

Emma climbed carefully onto the bed and wrapped her arms around her mother.

"I texted somebody."

"I didn't know who."

Sarah held her daughter tightly.

"You saved us."

Matteo quietly stepped into the hallway, giving them space.

Elena joined him.

"The prosecutor wants your testimony."

"They're willing to discuss cooperation."

Matteo looked through the hospital window.

For decades he had avoided courtrooms.

Avoided responsibility.

Avoided the people he'd hurt.

"What happens if I say yes?"

"You'll tell the truth."

"You'll help dismantle what's left of Victor's network."

"You'll face your own past too."

It wasn't a promise of freedom.

It wasn't even a promise of leniency.

It was simply the chance to do one thing he had never truly done:

Take responsibility.

After a long silence, Matteo answered.

"I'll testify."

Weeks later, the courtroom was packed.

Victor Kane sat at the defense table, no longer surrounded by armed guards or expensive suits.

Only lawyers.

Sarah testified about years of abuse.

Medical experts confirmed the extent of her injuries.

The cooperating guards described Victor's orders.

Finally, Matteo took the witness stand.

He admitted his own criminal past without excuses.

He described how Victor had exploited violence and corruption to silence victims.

Cross-examination was relentless.

The defense tried to paint him as an unreliable witness.

But the recordings, financial records, and testimony from multiple witnesses supported his account.

When the proceedings ended for the day, Emma waited outside the courtroom with a social worker.

She smiled when Matteo emerged.

"Mom says heroes tell the truth."

Matteo paused.

"I wasn't always one."

She slipped her small hand into his.

"You are trying now."

May you like

For the first time in many years, Matteo believed redemption wasn't something that happened in a single dramatic night.

It was something earned—one honest decision at a time.
