CHAPTER 4 – THE RECORDING

Victor climbed the stairs slowly.

Almost casually.

"I'll make you a deal," he called.

"Give me the child."

"I'll let you leave alive."

Matteo laughed for the first time that night.

"You've never kept a promise."

Victor's smile faded.

"So you remember."

"I remember everything."

Including the years when men like Victor paid criminals to do work they didn't want traced back to themselves.

Those years had cost Matteo nearly everything.

He would not let another child pay the price.

A guard crept toward the bedroom.

The doorknob turned.

Emma held her breath.

Before the door could open, Matteo slammed it shut from the outside, trapping the guard's arm.

The weapon fell.

Matteo kicked it away.

The guard surrendered.

"No more fighting," Matteo said.

"It's over."

Sirens wailed closer.

Victor heard them too.

His confidence cracked.

"You called the police?"

"I called people who actually protect children."

Downstairs, officers surrounded the property.

A police loudspeaker echoed through the neighborhood.

"This is the police!"

"Drop your weapons and exit the residence with your hands visible!"

Some guards immediately lowered their firearms.

Others hesitated.

Victor reached into his jacket.

Matteo reacted instantly.

He grabbed Victor's wrist before the older man could pull out his phone.

A small digital recorder hit the floor.

Matteo picked it up.

Victor's face went pale.

The recorder contained meetings.

Bribes.

Threats.

Payments.

Enough evidence to destroy the empire Victor had spent thirty years building.

"So that's what you've been protecting," Matteo said quietly.

Outside, armored officers entered the home.

Within minutes, every armed guard had been handcuffed.

Victor Kane was escorted from the house in silence.

As paramedics carried Sarah to an ambulance, Emma refused to let go of Matteo's hand.

"Are you leaving?"

Matteo looked at the flashing police lights.

The past he had tried to outrun had finally caught him.

"I don't know," he admitted.

"But I won't run anymore."

Across the street, Detective Elena Brooks watched the scene unfold.

She had spent ten years trying to arrest Matteo Reichi.

Now he stood covered in blood—not as a fugitive, but as the man who had saved a mother and her daughter.

She walked toward him.

"We need to talk."

Matteo nodded.

May you like

"I've been waiting a long time for this conversation."

End of Chapter 4.
