CHAPTER 4 – THE BILLION-DOLLAR DECISION

CHAPTER 4 – THE BILLION-DOLLAR DECISION
The party was over.
Nobody announced it.
Everyone simply knew.
Guests quietly gathered their spouses.
Luxury cars began leaving the Whitmore estate one after another.
Within twenty minutes...
What had been the most prestigious charity gala of the summer had become the social disaster everyone would discuss for years.
Inside Grant Whitmore's office, panic finally exploded.
He slammed the tablet onto his desk.
"What were you thinking?"
Brooke sobbed uncontrollably.
"It was just a joke."
"A joke?"
Grant's voice shook with rage.
"You may have just destroyed this family!"
Addison still refused to apologize.
"You're overreacting."
Grant stared at her as though seeing a stranger.
"You shoved an employee into a pool in front of Vincent Moretti."
"So?"
"So?"
He laughed bitterly.
"Our company owes nearly three hundred million dollars."
Silence.
"The banks are waiting for Vincent's signature."
Brooke slowly looked up.
"He wouldn't..."
Grant interrupted.
"He absolutely would."
Meanwhile...
Claire had changed into dry clothes borrowed from Maya.
She quietly packed her worn backpack.
She expected to leave unnoticed.
Instead...
Marco appeared at the service entrance.
"Miss Parker."
She turned nervously.
"Yes?"
"Mr. Moretti would like a word."
Claire hesitated.
"I'm not in trouble?"
Marco almost smiled.
"If you were..."
"...I wouldn't be asking."
Vincent stood alone beside the cliff overlooking the Atlantic.
The sunset painted the water gold.
Claire approached carefully.
"You wanted to see me?"
He nodded.
"You refused the money."
"It wasn't mine."
"It could have paid your sister's treatment."
Claire looked toward the ocean.
"My mother used to say..."
"...money earned by humiliation always costs more than it pays."
Vincent was quiet for a long moment.
"My mother said something similar."
Claire looked surprised.
"You were close?"
"I lost her when I was twenty."
"I'm sorry."
"So am I."
The wind carried the scent of salt between them.
Finally Vincent spoke again.
"Marco told me about your sister."
Claire stiffened.
"I didn't ask anyone to investigate you."
"I know."
"I investigate everyone."
For the first time that evening...
Claire laughed softly.
It caught Vincent off guard.
"You really do sound like the stories."
"They're usually less interesting than reality."
He reached into his jacket.
Claire immediately tensed.
Instead of cash...
He handed her a business card.
Simple.
Black.
Only a name.
Vincent Moretti
And a private phone number.
"If Emily's therapy is ever interrupted..."
Claire immediately shook her head.
"I can't accept charity."
"This isn't charity."
"What is it?"
"A debt."
Claire frowned.
"I don't understand."
Vincent looked toward the mansion behind them.
"My mother once needed someone to stand beside her."
His eyes returned to Claire.
"No one did."
A long silence followed.
"I won't make that mistake twice."
Claire slowly accepted the card.
Not because of the money.
Because she believed him.
Back inside the mansion...
Grant received a phone call.
He answered immediately.
"This is Grant."
The voice on the other end belonged to Vincent's chief legal officer.
"Mr. Whitmore."
"Yes?"
"Mr. Moretti asked me to inform you personally."
Grant gripped the phone tighter.
"The financing agreement..."
"...has been permanently withdrawn."
Grant's face turned white.
"No... please... let me explain..."
"There is one more message."
Grant could barely breathe.
The lawyer read Vincent's exact words.
"Any family that mistakes cruelty for class is not a family I do business with."
The call ended.
Grant slowly lowered the phone.
Outside his office window...
He watched Vincent's black motorcade disappear through the estate gates.
With it...
Three hundred and ten million dollars.
And the future of the Whitmore empire.
Meanwhile, sitting quietly in the back seat of the lead car, Vincent looked at the business card Claire now carried in her pocket.
He had walked away from one of the biggest deals of the year.
Not because of numbers.
Because of character.
What neither Vincent nor Claire realized...
Was that this single decision had just awakened enemies far more dangerous than the Whitmore sisters.
May you like
And by sunrise...
Someone would already be planning revenge.
