CHAPTER 3 – THE MAN WHO STOPPED THE PARTY

CHAPTER 3 – THE MAN WHO STOPPED THE PARTY

No one expected Vincent Moretti to leave the balcony.

Not Grant Whitmore.

Not Addison.

Not Brooke.

Certainly not Claire Parker.

The music had died.

The laughter had evaporated.

Only the soft dripping of water from Claire's soaked uniform echoed across the marble patio as she walked toward the service entrance, refusing to look back.

Then came the sound that froze every conversation.

Slow... deliberate... footsteps.

Every head turned.

Vincent Moretti descended the grand staircase alone.

He didn't hurry.

Men like Vincent never hurried.

People waited for them.

Grant Whitmore immediately forced a smile and stepped forward.

"Vincent! I'm terribly sorry about this unfortunate interruption. The staff can be so—"

Vincent kept walking.

He passed Grant without acknowledging him.

Grant's smile cracked.

The guests exchanged nervous glances.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Vincent stopped only when he stood directly in front of Claire.

She instinctively stepped back.

Her wet shoes squeaked against the marble.

"I'm sorry, sir," she said quietly. "I'll clean this up immediately."

Vincent looked at the puddle beneath her feet.

Then at the scattered money.

Then into her eyes.

"What exactly," he asked calmly, "are you apologizing for?"

Claire blinked.

"I... interrupted the party."

"No."

His voice remained perfectly level.

"You were interrupted."

The words landed like thunder.

Dozens of guests looked toward Addison and Brooke.

The sisters suddenly felt every eye in the garden shift.

Brooke forced a laugh.

"It was obviously an accident."

Vincent turned toward her.

"Was it?"

The single question drained the color from Brooke's face.

She had heard stories about Vincent Moretti.

Stories everyone insisted were exaggerated.

Standing beneath his gaze...

She realized they probably weren't exaggerated enough.

Grant quickly stepped between them.

"I'm sure this is all a misunderstanding."

Vincent finally looked at him.

"Grant."

It was the first time he had spoken the man's name all evening.

Grant smiled with relief.

"Yes?"

"You've spent eight months asking me to finance your coastal development."

"That's right."

"You told me your company represented integrity."

Grant nodded quickly.

"We absolutely do."

Vincent slowly pointed toward the scattered money.

"Is this your company's definition of integrity?"

Silence.

No one answered.

Even the ocean beyond the cliffs seemed to stop moving.

Addison finally stepped forward.

"Mr. Moretti, I think you've misunderstood."

"Oh?"

"The waitress slipped."

Vincent nodded once.

"And before she slipped..."

His eyes moved toward the security camera mounted beneath the roofline.

"...what happened?"

Addison's heartbeat stumbled.

She had forgotten.

The cameras.

There were cameras around the pool.

She swallowed.

"They don't record audio."

Vincent smiled slightly.

"I wasn't asking about audio."

He looked toward Marco.

"Bring me the footage."

Marco spoke into his earpiece.

"Already downloading."

Brooke felt her knees weaken.

Claire looked between them, confused.

She hadn't even noticed the cameras.

She had accepted that no one would believe her.

Now...

Everything had changed.

Grant's forehead glistened with sweat.

"There really isn't any need for that."

Vincent ignored him.

"You know something interesting about cameras?"

No one answered.

"They don't care how rich you are."

Another long silence.

"They only remember."

Ten minutes later, Marco returned carrying a tablet.

He handed it to Vincent.

Vincent didn't watch first.

Instead...

He handed it directly to Grant.

"You should see your daughters."

Grant frowned.

He pressed play.

The footage was crystal clear.

Brooke deliberately stepping into Claire's path.

Addison glancing around.

The unmistakable shove between Claire's shoulder blades.

The fall.

Then...

The money being thrown at her.

Grant watched every second.

When the video ended...

His hands were shaking.

He slowly turned toward his daughters.

"Tell me..."

Neither spoke.

"Tell me this isn't what it looks like."

Brooke burst into tears.

Addison remained silent.

Grant closed his eyes.

Silence was confession.

Guests who had laughed only minutes earlier now avoided looking at Claire altogether.

One elderly woman whispered,

"My God..."

A businessman quietly set down his champagne.

Another guest muttered,

"We laughed..."

Hannah Sloan folded her arms.

"You laughed because it was convenient."

No one argued.

Vincent looked toward Claire.

"Miss Parker."

"Yes?"

"Would you like to press charges?"

The question stunned everyone.

Claire stared.

"I..."

"You were assaulted."

She had never imagined someone with his power would ask what she wanted.

She searched his face.

There was no pity.

Only respect.

"I don't want revenge."

Vincent nodded.

"What do you want?"

Claire answered without hesitation.

"I want to go home."

May you like

For the first time in years...

Vincent felt genuine admiration.
