Chapter 4 Shadows of the Empire

The tension in the hospital room was thick enough to choke on. Victoria’s perfectly manicured nails dug into her designer handbag as she stared daggers at Emma. The air crackled with unspoken accusations.

Before anyone could speak again, the door swung open once more. This time, a tall man in a charcoal suit entered, his expression a mixture of shock and calculated composure. He looked strikingly similar to Alexander — same sharp jawline, same dark hair — but his eyes were colder.

“Brother,” the man said, voice smooth but edged with surprise. “They told me it was a miracle. I had to see it for myself.”

Damien Reed. Alexander’s younger brother and the man who had quietly positioned himself as interim CEO for the past three years.

Alexander’s body tensed beneath the sheets. Even in his weakened state, his presence dominated the room. “Damien,” he rasped. “Come to pay your respects… or to make sure I was really gone?”

Damien forced a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “Don’t be ridiculous. The company has been in good hands. But of course, now that you’re back…” His gaze flicked toward Victoria, then to Emma, lingering a second too long on the nurse. “Things will need to be… restructured.”

Victoria immediately moved closer to Damien, their shoulders almost touching — a silent alliance that didn’t go unnoticed by Alexander.

Emma felt completely out of place, like an intruder in a world of power and wealth she could never understand. She tried to gently pull her wrist from Alexander’s grip, but he refused to let go.

“Emma stays,” Alexander said firmly, his hoarse voice gaining strength with every word. He turned to his brother and ex-fiancée. “Both of you, leave. I need to speak with my doctor… and with her.”

Victoria’s face flushed with rage. “Alexander, you’ve been in a coma for three years! You don’t understand what’s been happening. The board is divided. Damien has been holding everything together. And now you want to be alone with… with this nurse who kissed you while you were unconscious?”

The accusation hung in the air like poison.

Emma’s face burned with humiliation. “I should go,” she whispered, trying once more to step back.

But Alexander’s grip tightened. With surprising strength, he pulled her closer until she was standing right beside his bed. Their eyes met — his deep blue, filled with intensity; hers wide with emotion.

“Stay,” he said softly, only for her. For a brief moment, the chaos around them faded. His thumb gently stroked the inside of her wrist, a small, tender gesture that sent warmth spreading through her body despite everything.

Damien chuckled darkly. “Interesting. Three years asleep and the first thing you do is defend a random nurse? The board will love this story.”

Victoria stepped forward, voice dripping with venom. “She probably did it for money. Or fame. The ‘miracle nurse’ who kissed the sleeping CEO. How romantic. How pathetic.”

Emma’s eyes stung with tears, but she refused to let them fall. She had endured worse in her life.

Alexander’s expression turned lethal. Even lying in a hospital bed, connected to machines, he radiated dangerous authority.

“Victoria,” he said coldly, “our engagement ended the day of the accident — whether you accepted it or not. And Damien…” His eyes narrowed at his brother. “If I find out that you or anyone else tried to benefit from my absence, I will destroy you.”

The room fell deathly silent.

Alexander turned back to Emma, his voice softening as he looked at her. “You stayed when no one else did. You talked to me. Read to me. You brought me back, Emma. Don’t let them make you feel small.”

For a heartbeat, the world narrowed to just the two of them. Emma’s heart fluttered at the sincerity in his eyes — a sweetness that cut through all the drama and threats.

But the moment was shattered when Dr. Patel returned with two security guards.

“I’m sorry, but Mr. Reed needs rest. Everyone except medical staff must leave immediately.”

As Victoria and Damien were escorted out, Victoria shot Emma one final poisonous look — a clear warning.

Before leaving, Damien paused at the door and smiled coldly at his brother. “Welcome back, Alexander. Try not to die again. The company still needs a leader… and I’ve grown rather fond of the role.”

The door closed.

Alone once more, Alexander exhaled weakly, his energy fading fast. He looked up at Emma, exhaustion clear in his eyes, but also something warm and genuine.

“Thank you,” he whispered. “For everything.”

Emma gently squeezed his hand, her voice barely audible. “You should rest now… Alexander.”

May you like

A faint smile touched his lips — the first real one since he woke up.

“Stay with me,” he murmured as his eyes began to close. “Just… a little longer.”
