Chapter 2 Awakening

Emma’s world stopped.
She pulled back so quickly she nearly lost her balance, her hand flying to her mouth. Her heart was pounding so violently she could hear it over the frantic beeping of the heart monitor.
Alexander Reed was staring at her.
Not with the empty, distant gaze she had grown used to for three years — but with sharp, alive, confused blue eyes that seemed to pierce right through her soul.
“I…” Emma’s voice failed her. Her cheeks burned with embarrassment and disbelief. “Mr. Reed… you’re awake.”
Alexander blinked slowly, as if trying to understand where he was. His throat moved with effort as he tried to speak again.
“What… are you doing?” he repeated, his voice gravelly and weak, barely more than a whisper. Each word seemed to cost him tremendous effort.
Emma’s hands trembled as she reached for the call button, but she couldn’t press it. Not yet. She was still frozen in place, caught between overwhelming joy and mortifying shame.
“I’m so sorry,” she whispered, tears spilling down her cheeks. “I thought… I thought you were never going to wake up. They were going to let you go today. I just… I wanted you to know that someone still believed in you.”
Alexander’s eyes softened slightly as he studied her face. Even in his weakened state, there was an intensity in his gaze that made Emma’s breath catch. He slowly lifted his hand — the same hand that had been motionless for three years — and weakly touched the spot on his lips where she had kissed him.
“You kissed me,” he said, almost to himself, as if testing the reality of the words.
Emma wanted the floor to swallow her whole.
“It was a goodbye,” she explained quickly, her voice shaky. “A stupid, impulsive goodbye. I never thought—”
A faint, raspy sound escaped his throat — something between a cough and a weak chuckle. The sound sent a shiver through Emma.
“Some goodbye,” he murmured.
The door suddenly burst open as two nurses and Dr. Patel rushed in, alerted by the dramatic change in the monitor readings.
“Mr. Reed?!” Dr. Patel exclaimed, eyes wide with shock. “This is… this is impossible.”
While the medical team swarmed around the bed, checking vitals and shining lights into Alexander’s eyes, Emma stepped back toward the wall, trying to disappear. Her hands were still shaking.
But Alexander’s gaze kept finding her through the chaos.
Even as doctors spoke rapidly about reflexes, brain activity, and miracles, his eyes returned to Emma again and again — curious, searching, and strangely warm.
When the initial frenzy calmed slightly, Alexander rasped out a single sentence, his voice hoarse but clear enough for everyone in the room to hear:
“Her name… is Emma, right?”
The room fell silent.
Emma’s heart skipped a beat.
Dr. Patel looked between them, confused. “Yes… Nurse Carter has been your primary caregiver for the past three years.”

Alexander’s eyes never left hers.
“Then tell the others to leave for a moment,” he said slowly, each word deliberate. “I want to talk to the woman who brought me back.”
