Chapter 2 - The Balcony of Betrayal

Alejandro ran with a speed no one believed possible.

The courtyard rushed beneath his feet.

Above him, Lilia’s tiny body dropped through the air.

For a fraction of a second, time seemed to fracture.

The scream of the maids.

The roar of the wind.

The sound of his own heartbeat pounding inside his skull.

Everything slowed.

Everything except his daughter.

“LILIA!”

The little girl’s terrified eyes locked onto his.

“Daddy!”

Then fate intervened.

A decorative canvas awning stretched over part of the courtyard below—a luxury feature Alejandro had barely noticed before.

Lilia crashed onto it.

The fabric tore instantly.

But it slowed her fall.

Just enough.

Alejandro lunged forward and caught her before she struck the stone ground.

The impact knocked him onto his back.

Pain exploded through his shoulder.

He didn't care.

His arms tightened around his daughter.

She was alive.

Shaking.

Crying.

Terrified.

But alive.

For several seconds Alejandro couldn't breathe.

He simply held her against his chest.

The way he should have held Victoria when she needed him.

The way he should have been there years ago.

“Daddy...” Lilia whispered through tears.

“I've got you.”

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Nobody is going to hurt you.”

The servants gathered around them.

Some were crying.

Others stared upward toward the balcony.

Toward Vanesa.

She was no longer smiling.

For the first time, fear appeared in her eyes.

Real fear.

Because Alejandro slowly stood up.

Still carrying Lilia.

Still saying nothing.

And somehow that silence was worse than any scream.

Vanesa stepped away from the railing.

“Alejandro, I can explain—”

“Don't move.”

His voice echoed across the courtyard.

Every person present froze.

Including Vanesa.

The temperature seemed to drop ten degrees.

Alejandro handed Lilia to Rosa, the elderly housekeeper who had cared for her since birth.

“Take her inside.”

“But Señor—”

“Now.”

Rosa nodded immediately.

As she carried Lilia away, the child reached toward her father.

“Don't leave me.”

Alejandro gently kissed her forehead.

“I won't.”

Then he turned.

And started walking toward the mansion.

Toward Vanesa.

Four minutes later.

The entire household had gathered in the grand living room.

Nobody had been given a choice.

Alejandro stood near the fireplace.

Vanesa sat on the sofa.

Trying desperately to appear composed.

Failing.

“What happened?” Alejandro asked.

His voice was quiet.

Vanesa seized the opportunity.

“She slipped.”

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

“She was leaning over the railing,” Vanesa continued. “I tried to stop her, but she lost her balance.”

Alejandro nodded once.

“Interesting.”

Hope flickered across Vanesa's face.

Maybe he believed her.

Maybe he hadn't seen clearly from the courtyard.

Maybe—

“Bring them in.”

The front doors opened.

Two security guards entered.

Behind them came three gardeners.

A driver.

Four housekeepers.

And the maintenance supervisor.

Every witness.

Vanesa's stomach dropped.

Alejandro looked at the first gardener.

“What did you see?”

The man swallowed hard.

“I saw Señora Vanesa place her hand on Lilia's back.”

Another servant spoke.

“She pushed her.”

“I saw it too.”

“So did I.”

One after another.

The testimonies piled up.

Like stones on a grave.

Vanesa's confidence evaporated.

“They are lying!” she shouted.

“No,” Alejandro replied.

“You paid them!”

“No.”

“You want to destroy me!”

Alejandro stared at her.

Then he reached into his suit pocket.

And placed a small object on the glass table.

A phone.

Vanesa recognized it immediately.

Lilia's phone.

The color drained from her face.

Alejandro pressed play.

The room filled with sound.

Video footage.

The balcony.

Vanesa's face.

Her hand.

Her voice.

Clear as crystal.

"Goodbye, little mouse."

Then the push.

Silence consumed the room.

Absolute silence.

Vanesa looked as if she had seen death itself.

Because she suddenly understood.

Lilia had been recording a video for her father.

A video she never got the chance to send.

But the phone had survived the fall.

And it had captured everything.

Every word.

Every second.

Every crime.

Alejandro slowly looked up.

Their eyes met.

“You tried to kill my daughter.”

Vanesa began shaking.

“Alejandro, please—”

“You knew I lost my wife.”

“Alejandro—”

“You knew what that did to me.”

Tears streamed down her face.

“It wasn't supposed to happen like this.”

The room gasped.

Not a denial.

A confession.

Alejandro closed his eyes.

For one painful moment, Victoria's face appeared in his memory.

Then Lilia's.

And when he opened his eyes again, something had changed.

“Call the police.”

Vanesa collapsed to her knees.

“No!”

The guards moved forward.

She grabbed Alejandro's leg.

“Please! Please don't do this!”

He looked down at her.

Emotionless.

The same way she had looked at his daughter from the balcony.

“You're right,” he said quietly.

For a second, hope returned to her face.

Then Alejandro delivered the sentence that would haunt her forever.

“I won't do anything to you.”

The guards stopped.

Everyone looked confused.

Even Vanesa.

Alejandro's expression never changed.

“Because unlike you, I don't hurt children.”

He nodded toward the front door.

Red and blue lights flashed through the windows.

Police vehicles.

Someone had already called them.

Alejandro continued.

“The law will do what I don't need to.”

The realization shattered her.

The mansion.

The money.

The luxury.

The future she had planned.

Gone.

In a single afternoon.

As officers entered the room, Vanesa was led away in handcuffs.

Sobbing.

Begging.

Screaming.

Alejandro never watched her leave.

Instead, he turned toward the staircase.

Toward the second floor.

Toward the room where his daughter was waiting.

Because for the first time in years, he finally understood something.

Business could wait.

Meetings could wait.

Money could wait.

But family could not.

And as he opened Lilia's bedroom door, the little girl ran into his arms.

Alejandro held her tighter than he had ever held anything in his life.

Outside, sirens faded into the distance.

But inside the mansion, a far darker mystery was only beginning.

Because hidden among Victoria's old belongings was a letter.

A letter written just days before her death.

A letter containing one chilling sentence:

"If anything happens to me, do not trust Vanesa."

And when Alejandro read the signature at the bottom, his blood turned to ice.

May you like

Because the letter was dated six months before he had ever met Vanesa.
