CHAPTER 7 – The Enemy No One Saw Coming

CHAPTER 7 – The Enemy No One Saw Coming
Three days after the canceled wedding, Alex believed the worst was finally behind him.
He was wrong.
At exactly 8:17 on a rainy Tuesday morning, Marcus Reed entered Alex's office without knocking.
"You need to see this."
He dropped a large envelope onto the desk.
Inside were twelve photographs.
Every one of them showed Alex and Lily.
Feeding Ruby.
Walking through Millennium Park.
Talking outside the museum.
Even laughing over coffee.
The newest photo had been taken less than twenty-four hours earlier.
Alex's expression hardened.
"Someone's following her."
Marcus nodded.
"And they're professionals."
The final photograph carried a handwritten note.
You destroyed the wrong family.
The handwriting matched nothing in police databases.
But the paper carried a faint fingerprint.
Within hours, forensic analysts identified the owner.
Richard Hale.
Vanessa's older brother.
Unlike Vanessa, Richard had never relied on charm.
He relied on violence.
He had spent years working as an "enforcer" for organized financial crime before disappearing overseas.
Now he was back.
And according to federal investigators, he blamed Alex for everything.
His sister was awaiting trial.
Victor Lawson had agreed to cooperate with prosecutors.
Their criminal network was collapsing.
Richard wanted someone to pay.
He chose Lily.
Marcus doubled security immediately.
Alex refused.
"She doesn't even know she's in danger."
"Exactly."
"I'm not turning her life into a prison because of me."
Marcus sighed.
"Then tell her the truth."
That afternoon Alex drove to the Art Institute.
Lily was restoring a nineteenth-century landscape inside a conservation studio.
When she saw his face, she immediately put down her brush.
"What happened?"
Alex didn't hide anything.
He told her about Richard.
The photographs.
The threats.
The danger.
Lily listened quietly.
When he finished, she surprised everyone.
"So..."
She smiled gently.
"We call the police."
Marcus blinked.
"That's it?"
"What else should we do?"
Alex laughed despite himself.
"You make everything sound simple."
"It usually is."
She looked directly at him.
"Fear only wins when people start making foolish decisions."
Richard, however, had already made his.
That night, Lily left the museum just after closing.
A black SUV rolled slowly beside the sidewalk.
The rear door opened.
Two men stepped out.
Marcus's surveillance team reacted instantly.
One shouted,
"Federal agents! Don't move!"
The kidnappers ran.
Richard remained inside the vehicle.
He slammed the accelerator.
The SUV sped toward Lily.
Alex, arriving moments later, saw everything.
Without thinking, he sprinted into the street.
He shoved Lily aside.
The SUV clipped Alex's shoulder, throwing him hard against the pavement before crashing into a concrete barrier.
Airbags exploded.
Richard staggered out holding a handgun.
Before he could raise it—
Marcus tackled him.
The weapon slid across the wet asphalt.
Police officers, already responding to the attempted kidnapping, surrounded the scene within seconds.
Richard was arrested without firing a single shot.
As officers pulled him away, he glared at Alex.
"This isn't over."
Alex looked back calmly.
"It is for you."
At the hospital, doctors confirmed Alex had escaped with a fractured collarbone and several bruised ribs.
Lily sat beside his bed long after visiting hours.
"You could have been killed."
Alex smiled weakly.
"I've made worse business decisions."
She rolled her eyes.
"That wasn't funny."
"No."
"It wasn't."
Silence settled between them.
Then Lily quietly took his hand.
"You don't have to protect everyone by yourself anymore."
For the first time in years, Alex allowed someone else to carry part of his burden.
May you like
He squeezed her hand.
"I'd like that."
