CHAPTER 4 – The Ghosts Behind the Smile

CHAPTER 4 – The Ghosts Behind the Smile
The first page contained six different names.
Vanessa Hale.
Vanessa Collins.
Nina Harper.
Claire Weston.
Emily Stone.
Rachel Dean.
Different identities.
Different states.
Same woman.
Alex stared silently.
"What is this?"
Marcus sat opposite him.
"She changes names every few years."
Daniel added another document.
"Different hair colors."
"Different careers."
"Different social circles."
"But always the same pattern."
Margaret opened another folder.
"We found four wealthy men."
Each photograph showed Vanessa smiling beside someone else.
The relationships had ended quietly.
No lawsuits.
No criminal charges.
Only broken engagements.
Missing jewelry.
Disappearing investment accounts.
One man had sold his company after suffering what newspapers called a nervous breakdown.
Another had left the country.
A third refused to discuss Vanessa at all.
The fourth...
Was dead.
Officially from a heart attack.
Marcus didn't like coincidences.
"We kept digging."
He placed another photograph on the desk.
Alex leaned forward.
His heartbeat slowed.
The woman beside Vanessa looked familiar.
Older.
Hard eyes.
Expensive coat.
Cold smile.
Daniel spoke first.
"Her name is Evelyn Cross."
Alex frowned.
"I know that name."
"You should."
Margaret answered.
"She spent six years in federal prison."
"For what?"
"Romance fraud."
Silence.
Then Marcus finished the sentence.
"She trained women to target wealthy businessmen."
Alex slowly leaned back.
Everything inside him turned cold.
"But that's not all."
Marcus switched on a monitor.
Security footage appeared.
Vanessa leaving a downtown café.
Across from her sat a man in his forties.
Dark suit.
Expensive watch.
Scar across his chin.
Victor Lawson.
Private investigator reports identified him as a professional con artist with connections to financial crimes across three states.
Daniel looked furious.
"They've met eleven times."
Alex watched the video.
Victor handed Vanessa an envelope.
She counted cash.
Smiled.
Then kissed his cheek.
Not romantically.
Professionally.
Like partners celebrating progress.
"How long have they been watching me?"
Alex asked quietly.
Marcus answered.
"Almost four months before the accident."
Alex closed his eyes.
The grocery store.
The water.
Lily.
Everything after that...
Had been carefully erased by coincidence that wasn't coincidence at all.
He suddenly remembered something.
"The accident."
Marcus nodded.
"We examined traffic cameras."
Another video appeared.
Alex watched Vanessa standing safely on the sidewalk.
Looking directly toward his approaching SUV.
Checking her reflection in a store window.
Then...
Stepping into the crosswalk without looking.
Exactly as planned.
Frame by frame.
She wasn't surprised.
She was performing.
Alex stood and walked toward the window overlooking the gardens.
For several minutes no one interrupted him.
Finally he spoke.
"I almost married her."
Daniel answered softly.
"You almost became her next victim."
Across town...
Vanessa celebrated with Victor inside an exclusive rooftop lounge.
Crystal glasses clinked together.
Victor grinned.
"Two more days."
Vanessa smiled.
"Then I'm Mrs. Carter."
"And after that?"
She opened the preliminary copy of Alex's financial portfolio.
"There are trusts."
"Stock options."
"Properties."
"A foundation."
She tapped the mansion photo.
"I like this one."
Victor laughed.
"You always did dream big."
She looked toward Chicago's skyline.
"I don't dream."
"I calculate."

Back at the mansion...
Alex finally opened a small contact saved months earlier.
Lily Museum Ducks.
His thumb hovered over the screen.
He had ignored her.
Forgotten her.
Chosen someone else.
Did he even deserve another conversation?
Before he could decide...
His phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
He answered.
"Alex Carter."
A frightened voice whispered,
"Mr. Carter..."
It was an elderly woman.
"You don't know me."
"My name is Helen Foster."
"I used to clean apartments."
"I cleaned Vanessa's place three years ago."
Alex exchanged a quick glance with Marcus.
Helen continued.
"I saw the news about your wedding."
"I've been trying to convince myself to stay quiet."
"But I can't anymore."
Her voice shook.
"I found something back then..."
"What?"
"A box."
"Filled with engagement rings."
Alex's blood ran cold.
Helen took a deep breath.
"There were photographs too."
"Different men."
"They all looked happy."
"Just like you."
She began crying.
"I think..."
"I think you're not the first groom."
The line went silent.
Alex slowly lowered the phone.
Marcus looked at him.
"What now?"
Alex's expression hardened for the first time since all this had begun.
"No wedding."
He paused.
"Not yet."
A slow, controlled smile appeared.
May you like
"If Vanessa wants a performance..."
"We're going to give her one she'll never forget."
