Chapter 7 - The Trap is Set

The Grand Ballroom at Navy Pier was a sea of glittering diamonds, black tuxedos, and flowing silk gowns.

Crystal chandeliers hung from the vaulted ceilings, casting a warm, deceptive glow over five hundred of Chicago’s wealthiest elite. It was the annual Winter Benefactor's Gala, an event Marcus Whitmore usually avoided, but tonight, his arrival sent a palpable shockwave through the room.

Whispers broke out along the edges of the ballroom as Marcus walked in. He wore a flawless black tuxedo, his hair perfectly combed, his expression completely unreadable. Rumors of Victoria’s arrest had already begun to leak to the financial press, and every camera lens in the room immediately tracked his movement.

Standing near the heavy ice sculptures at the back of the room, two men in custom-tailored suits watched Marcus closely. One of them had his hand in his pocket, resting on a burner device that maintained a direct link to Vance’s marine location.

Marcus moved straight to the main stage, where the microphone stood ready for the evening’s keynote speeches. He didn't wait to be introduced. He stepped onto the riser, adjusting the lapels of his jacket, and tapped the mic.

The entire ballroom fell dead silent.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Marcus began, his voice echoing with absolute authority through the massive sound system. "Many of you have read the headlines tonight regarding Whitmore Logistics and my former fiancée, Victoria Hargrove. You’ve heard rumors of instability. You’ve heard rumors of a corporate collapse."

In the back of the room, Vance’s operatives smirked, believing Marcus was about to deliver the forced resignation speech exactly as scripted.

"But I’m here tonight to tell you that those rumors are entirely accurate," Marcus continued, a cold, dangerous smile touching his lips. "Whitmore Logistics is under attack. Not from competitors, but from a shadow syndicate operated by this woman."

With a sudden wave of his hand, the massive projector screens behind Marcus flickered to life.

Instead of the charity’s promotional video, the screens displayed a massive, high-definition data dump. It wasn't just corporate files; it was the complete, unedited transcripts of Victoria’s encrypted jailhouse phone calls, the offshore banking routing numbers connecting her family to Vance’s organization, and live, real-time GPS tracking data showing Vance’s cargo vessel currently sitting three miles out on the freezing waters of Lake Geneva.

The ballroom erupted into chaos. High-society donors gasped, phones began buzzing across every table, and the two syndicate operatives in the back immediately turned to flee toward the exit doors.

But before they could reach the grand entrance, the doors burst open.

Dozens of federal agents in tactical gear flooded the ballroom, weapons drawn, pinning the operatives to the polished floorboards before they could even draw their weapons.

Marcus stepped down from the podium, his face utterly ruthless as he walked past the panicked crowd. Arthur was waiting for him at the side exit, holding a rugged satellite tracking terminal.

"We intercepted their communications, Marcus!" Arthur shouted over the noise of the crowd. "The moment you dumped the data, Vance panic-called his shore team. We have his exact coordinates on the lake. He’s at the old abandoned timber dock on the northern shore of the estate."

"Get the helicopter ready," Marcus said, ripping off his tuxedo tie as he ran toward the exit. "The game is over. Now I’m hunting."
