Chapter 5 - Hidden Alliances

The wind howled through the skeletal steel girders of the Rockford automated terminal, kicking up sheets of white powder that completely blinded the security cameras.

It was 3:52 AM.

Marcus sat in the passenger seat of a dark SUV parked half a mile down the access road, his eyes glued to a rugged tablet showing the facility’s internal diagnostics. Beside him, a state police tactical commander named Vance—no, Captain Vance, a legitimate officer—checked the safety on his sidearm.

"My team is in position at the loading docks," Captain Vance whispered into his radio headset. "We’ve got zero visibility out here, Whitmore. If that hijacked rig pulls up, we are going to have to move fast before they breach the vault gate."

"They aren't just going to drive through the front gate," Marcus said, staring at the power grid lines on his screen. "Look at the telemetry. The power drop Victoria noted isn't a standard maintenance cycle. It’s an forced external surge. Someone is sitting inside the local substation right now, waiting to throw the switch."

Suddenly, the screen in Marcus's hands went entirely black.

The towering halogen floodlights illuminating the Rockford facility died instantly, plunging the entire industrial complex into absolute darkness. The heavy electronic locks on the perimeter gates groaned, losing their magnetic seals and swinging open under the sheer force of the wind.

Down the highway, the massive, unlit shape of Truck 404 materialized out of the snowstorm like a ghost ship. It didn't slow down. It rolled straight through the unlatched gates, its tires crunching heavily over the fresh ice.

"Go, go, go!" Captain Vance barked into his mic.

Tactical units leaped from their hidden positions, their laser sights cutting through the driving snow. But as they surrounded the moving semi-truck, the driver's side door suddenly flung open. A single figure tumbled out into the snow, hands raised, sobbing in terror.

It wasn't Vance’s muscle. It was a regular Whitmore Logistics driver, his hands zip-tied behind his back, a burner phone taped to his chest.

"It’s a decoy!" Marcus shouted through his comms, his heart dropping into his stomach as he realized the trap. He looked back at his tablet, which was slowly rebooting on backup cellular data. "The truck isn't breaching the vault. They didn't need the truck to get inside!"

At that exact moment, twenty miles away inside a sterile cell at the county jail, Victoria Hargrove sat under the dim, buzzing light of the holding area. She had refused to change into a jumpsuit, still wrapped in her ruined silk robe. A guard walked past her cell, dropping a standard plastic cup of water on her bench.

Tucked tightly under the base of the cup was a tiny, micro-sized burner phone.

Victoria didn't hesitate. She waited until the guard's footsteps faded down the concrete corridor, then flipped the device open. She dialed a single encrypted number.

"Marcus fell for the Rockford play," Victoria whispered, her voice low and venomous. "He took his entire primary security detail to the distribution terminal. The penthouse at the Drake is completely exposed. Only two guards remain on the floor."

On the other end of the line, the raspy, cold voice of Vance replied, "The package is already in the elevator, Victoria. By the time Marcus realizes the Rockford truck was driven by a hostage, we’ll have the maid and the kid. He'll sign over every contract he owns to get them back."

Victoria smiled in the dark, her fingers tightening around the plastic phone. "Make sure he watches them break."
