CHAPTER 4 — The Favor Emilio Carver Never Forgot

CHAPTER 4 — The Favor Emilio Carver Never Forgot
Three days later.
Benedetto's looked exactly the same.
The lunch rush.
The clinking glasses.
The fountain.
Only Nora knew how different everything felt.
She had heard nothing from Emilio Carver.
No flowers.
No thank-you card.
No phone call.
Honestly...
that was exactly what she expected.
Acts of kindness weren't investments.
They didn't need repayment.
She tied on her apron and began serving tables.
At 12:17 p.m., every conversation in the restaurant stopped.
Six black SUVs rolled to the curb.
Customers turned toward the windows.
The front doors opened.
Emilio Carver entered alone.
No bodyguards beside him.
No dramatic entrance.
Just quiet confidence.
The restaurant manager nearly tripped over a chair rushing to greet him.
"Mr. Carver! We weren't expecting—"
"I'm here for Nora."
Every employee looked toward her.
She walked over slowly.
"Is your father okay?"
"He'll recover."
She smiled with genuine relief.
"I'm glad."
Emilio reached into his coat.
The room collectively held its breath.
He placed a plain white envelope on the nearest table.
"I owe you."
Nora didn't touch it.
"You don't."
"I do."
"No."
He looked almost amused.
"You're arguing with me?"
"I'm disagreeing."
The manager looked ready to faint.
No one disagreed with Emilio Carver.
No one.
Nora pushed the envelope back toward him.
"I didn't help your family for money."
"I know."
"Then keep it."
"It isn't money."
She frowned.
"What is it?"
"Open it."
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
At first glance, it looked like a receipt.
Then she read the words.
St. Catherine Neurological Center
Patient: Liam Vance
Balance Due: $84,600
AMOUNT PAID IN FULL
Nora stopped breathing.
Her hands began shaking.
She looked up slowly.
"You..."
"You never asked."
"I couldn't."
"I know."
Tears welled in her eyes.
"How did you even know?"
Emilio glanced toward her apron pocket.
"The notification reflected in the restaurant window."
"I wasn't spying."
"I've spent my life noticing things other people miss."
Nora whispered,
"I can't accept this."
"You already have."
"What?"
"The surgery was yesterday."
Her knees nearly gave out.
"What?"
"He came through successfully."
She stared.
"I..."
"You were donating blood while my attorneys were making calls."
The restaurant disappeared around her.
All she could think about was Liam.
Walking.
Smiling.
Living.
She looked at Emilio with tears streaming down her face.
"I don't know how to thank you."
"You already did."
He nodded toward the hospital across town.
"You saved two generations of my family."
Before Nora could answer, the restaurant doors burst open.
A young man in a hoodie sprinted inside.
He wasn't carrying a weapon.
He was carrying a little girl.
She couldn't have been more than five.
She was unconscious.
The father shouted desperately,
"Please!"
"Someone help!"
"She isn't breathing!"
The entire restaurant froze.
Again.
And without thinking...
Nora ran first.
Emilio followed.
Neither of them realized that this emergency was no accident.
Across the street, inside a parked sedan, a man lowered a camera.
He smiled as he captured every second.
Then he picked up his phone.
"The waitress took the bait," he said.
A cold voice answered.
May you like
"Good."
"Phase two begins now."
