CHAPTER 3 — A Debt No Money Could Measure

CHAPTER 3 — A Debt No Money Could Measure

The message stayed on Nora's screen long after the notification disappeared.

PAYMENT REQUIRED: $84,600.

For a moment, the bustling courtyard faded into silence.

Her younger brother, Liam, had been waiting seven months for the surgery that might let him walk without constant pain. Every delay had made his condition worse. Every appeal to the insurance company had ended with another form, another rejection, another polite apology.

Nora slipped the phone back into her apron.

Not now.

Phoebe needed her.

Emilio watched the tiny movement.

He had spent thirty years reading people before they spoke. He knew the difference between inconvenience and catastrophe.

"What happened?" he asked quietly.

Nora forced a smile.

"My personal life."

"Bad?"

"Very."

She left it there.

Most people, once they heard Emilio Carver's name, immediately asked him for something.

Money.

Influence.

Protection.

Nora asked for nothing.

That alone caught his attention.

The convoy reached St. Vincent's Hospital in less than twelve minutes.

Security officers cleared hallways.

Doctors suddenly stood a little straighter.

Administrators appeared from nowhere.

Power had a strange way of announcing itself without a word being spoken.

Phoebe didn't notice any of it.

She ran.

Bare feet slapping across polished hospital floors, still wrapped in the oversized towel from Benedetto's.

She burst into Room 714.

An elderly man lay connected to monitors, his face pale beneath silver hair.

The moment he saw Phoebe, tears filled his eyes.

"My little scientist..."

Phoebe collapsed onto his chest.

"I'm sorry."

"No."

She shook her head violently.

"I thought you forgot."

"I tried to come."

"I know."

"I should've called."

"I know."

Neither of them mentioned the science fair.

Neither cared anymore.

Outside the room, Nora quietly stepped back to give them privacy.

Emilio remained beside her.

"You gave my daughter something I couldn't."

Nora shook her head.

"No."

"You did."

"I just listened."

He studied her.

"No one listens to my family."

"They're too busy fearing you."

The sentence would have terrified almost anyone else.

Emilio simply nodded.

"They're right to."

Nora looked directly into his eyes.

"I don't think your daughter is."

For the first time in years...

Emilio laughed.

A small laugh.

A tired laugh.

The kind that surprised even him.

Twenty minutes later, Dr. Evelyn Brooks approached with a clipboard.

"We've stabilized your father."

Emilio exhaled.

"But..."

Doctors always had a "but."

"He needs bypass surgery within forty-eight hours."

"Do it."

"It's already scheduled."

She hesitated.

"There is another issue."

Emilio frowned.

"The donor blood."

"What about it?"

"He has an extremely rare blood type."

Within seconds, three security guards pulled out their phones.

"I'll have people flown in."

Dr. Brooks shook her head.

"We've already contacted regional blood banks."

"Nothing?"

"Very little."

"How long?"

"If we don't secure additional units..."

She didn't finish.

She didn't have to.

Nora felt a strange chill.

Rare blood type.

She remembered something.

Her mother had once joked that their family carried "gold in their veins."

Nora looked at the doctor.

"What blood type?"

"Bombay phenotype."

Nora blinked.

"...Excuse me?"

The doctor looked surprised.

"You've heard of it?"

"I have it."

The hallway went silent.

Even Emilio looked confused.

Dr. Brooks stared.

"You've been tested?"

"When I donated blood in college."

The doctor's heartbeat seemed visible in her throat.

"There are fewer than a few hundred registered donors in North America."

"I know."

"You match."

Nora swallowed.

"I can donate."

Dr. Brooks almost smiled.

"You may have just saved his life."

An hour later, Nora sat quietly in the donation chair.

No cameras.

No speeches.

No audience.

No audience.

Just a needle.

A plastic tube.

And blood flowing toward a man she'd never met.

Phoebe peeked through the doorway.

"Does it hurt?"

"A little."

"Why are you doing it?"

Nora smiled.

"Because someone should."

Phoebe walked over and hugged her carefully, avoiding the IV line.

"I don't want you to get sick."

"I'll be okay."

"No."

Phoebe whispered into her shoulder.

"I mean forever."

Nora froze.

Children sometimes said things adults couldn't.

She hugged the little girl back.

"So will you."

Neither of them noticed Emilio standing outside the room...

May you like

Watching.

And making a decision that would change Nora's life forever.
