CHAPTER 5 – The Night the Empire Fell

CHAPTER 5 – The Night the Empire Fell
Leo's scream ripped through the darkness.
"Emma!"
Every instinct in my body took over.
I ran.
Not toward the nearest exit.
Toward his voice.
The emergency lights flickered red through the endless hallways, throwing long shadows across the marble floors.
Somewhere below us, automatic gunfire echoed through the penthouse.
Men shouted.
Glass shattered.
The DeLuca estate had become a battlefield.
"Leo!"
I rounded the corner just as two masked men burst from the nursery.
One of them had Leo thrown over his shoulder.
The little boy was crying so hard he could barely breathe.
"No!"
I grabbed the nearest object—a bronze statue nearly as heavy as I was—and swung with every ounce of strength.
The statue slammed into the kidnapper's knee.
Bone cracked.
He collapsed with a scream, dropping Leo onto the carpet.
The second man raised his pistol.
Before he could fire—
Bang!
A single shot echoed through the hallway.
The bullet struck the gunman's shoulder.
He spun backward.
Matteo emerged from the darkness like death itself.
His suit jacket was gone.
Blood stained one sleeve.
His pistol never wavered.
"You touched my son."
His voice was almost calm.
"You shouldn't have done that."
The wounded attacker laughed.
"You still don't understand."
He reached into his pocket.
Not for another weapon.
For a phone.
He pressed a button.
A video appeared on the screen.
Everyone froze.
It showed Silvio.
He was standing beside a woman tied to a chair.
My mother.
Bruised.
Terrified.
Still alive.
Silvio smiled into the camera.
"If you're watching this, Matteo... your son is only half the insurance policy."
He rested a hand on my mother's shoulder.
"The other half belongs to Emma."
The screen went black.
For the first time since I'd met him...
Matteo looked shaken.
He lowered his gun.
The attacker smiled.
"You lose either way."
Then—
He bit down hard.
Blood spilled from the corner of his mouth.
Poison.
Within seconds, he was dead.
No interrogation.
No answers.
Only silence.
An hour later, the penthouse looked like a war zone.
Police sirens circled blocks away but never entered.
This was DeLuca territory.
Inside the study, Matteo spread photographs across the desk.
Maps.
Financial records.
Phone logs.
Silvio hadn't simply disappeared.
He had planned this for years.
Marco entered carrying another folder.
"We found something in the old warehouse."
Matteo looked up.
"What?"
"A hidden office."
He placed several faded photographs on the desk.
The first showed Sofia holding newborn Leo.
The second showed Silvio standing behind them.
The third...
Made Matteo stop breathing.
It showed Sofia arguing with Silvio.
Written on the back in Sofia's handwriting were six words:
He knows Leo isn't helpless.
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Matteo slowly opened another envelope found with the photos.
Inside was a confidential medical evaluation.
Not autism.
Not developmental delay.
The report described something entirely different.
Leo possessed an extraordinary memory.
He recognized faces after seeing them only once.
He noticed patterns adults routinely missed.
He could repeat entire conversations weeks later.
The specialist had written:
The child is exceptionally gifted but severely traumatized. Continued exposure to emotional abuse will likely cause permanent psychological damage.
Mrs. Higgins hadn't been drugging Leo because he was dangerous.
She had been drugging him because he remembered too much.
Matteo sat down heavily.
"He saw something."
I nodded.
"And someone realized he could never be allowed to tell anyone."
Suddenly—
Leo spoke from the doorway.
"I remember."
Neither of us had heard him wake up.
He held his teddy bear against his chest.
His small face was pale.
Matteo knelt immediately.
"What do you remember, buddy?"
Leo stared into space.
"Mommy yelled."
His breathing became uneven.
"Uncle Silvio pushed her."
The room fell silent.
"I saw..."
He squeezed his eyes shut.
"...the shiny necklace."
"What necklace?" I asked softly.
"The snake."
Matteo's head snapped upward.
Snake.
Silvio always wore a silver serpent pendant.
Leo continued.
"Mommy said..."
His tiny voice trembled.
"...'You'll never take my son.'"
Then he burst into tears.
"I couldn't help her."
Matteo wrapped his son in his arms.
"You were a baby."
"You couldn't."
But I noticed something else.
Leo wasn't remembering random moments.
May you like
He was remembering...
The night Sofia died.
