CHAPTER 3 – The Glass That Saved a Life

CHAPTER 3 – The Glass That Saved a Life

The ballroom fell into absolute silence.

Apple juice dripped from Mrs. Higgins's trembling fingers onto the polished marble.

The shattered crystal glittered like tiny diamonds beneath the chandeliers.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Matteo lowered the pistol with the calm precision of a man who had fired far too many warning shots in his life.

His eyes never left Mrs. Higgins.

"I don't repeat myself."

His voice was quiet.

That made it even more terrifying.

"Bring me another glass."

Mrs. Higgins forced a nervous smile.

"It was only apple juice."

"Then you'll have no problem drinking it."

The color drained from her face.

Around the room, senators, judges, CEOs, and reporters exchanged uneasy glances.

They had expected speeches and champagne.

Instead they were watching New York's most feared man interrogate one of his oldest employees.

Silvio stepped forward smoothly.

"Boss."

His tone remained respectful.

"Perhaps this isn't the place."

Matteo turned toward him.

"No."

His icy stare swept across the ballroom.

"This is exactly the place."

He looked at one of his bodyguards.

"Marco."

The giant man appeared instantly.

"Take a fresh bottle from the kitchen."

"No one touches it except you."

"And pour two glasses."

One for Mrs. Higgins.

One for me."

Silvio's expression changed for the first time all evening.

Barely.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Tiny.

Controlled.

Real.

Five minutes later...

Marco returned carrying a sealed bottle.

Everyone watched him break the cap.

He poured two identical glasses.

Matteo handed one to Mrs. Higgins.

The other remained untouched.

"Drink."

She hesitated.

Only for a second.

Then she lifted the glass.

Before it reached her lips—

Silvio suddenly knocked it from her hand.

The crystal smashed across the floor.

"My apologies," he said quickly.

"My hand slipped."

Nobody believed him.

Not even Matteo.

The room became so quiet that I could hear Leo breathing beside me.

Matteo slowly smiled.

It wasn't the smile of a relieved father.

It was the smile of a predator finally spotting movement in tall grass.

"Interesting."

He looked directly at Silvio.

"You've never been clumsy before."

Silvio held his gaze.

"I was trying to protect Mrs. Higgins from your temper."

Matteo laughed once.

A single cold laugh.

"My temper?"

He stepped closer.

"No."

"You were protecting something else."

Then everything happened at once.

Mrs. Higgins shoved a serving cart toward the guards.

Crystal exploded.

Guests screamed.

Silvio pulled a pistol from inside his jacket.

Bodyguards drew weapons instantly.

The ballroom erupted into chaos.

"DOWN!" someone shouted.

I grabbed Leo and threw us behind a marble column just as the first shots echoed through the room.

Bullets shattered chandeliers.

Glass rained from the ceiling.

People crawled beneath banquet tables.

Security rushed toward Matteo.

But he wasn't hiding.

He walked straight into the gunfire.

Calm.

Precise.

Deadly.

Two shots.

Two of Silvio's men collapsed instantly.

Another reached for Matteo—

Before he could fire—

Matteo struck him across the throat with the pistol.

The man dropped unconscious.

It lasted less than thirty seconds.

When the smoke cleared...

Seven men lay on the floor.

Silvio was gone.

Mrs. Higgins was gone.

And so was the silver serving tray.

"Seal every exit!"

Matteo roared.

"No one leaves this building!"

The penthouse transformed into a fortress.

Phones were confiscated.

Guests were questioned.

Security cameras were reviewed.

But Silvio had disappeared as though he had never existed.

Leo clung to me without speaking.

His little hands wouldn't stop shaking.

Matteo knelt beside his son.

"It's over."

Leo stared into his father's eyes.

Then whispered something so quietly I almost missed it.

"He'll come back."

Matteo froze.

"What did you say?"

Leo swallowed hard.

"The bad man said..."

His voice cracked.

"...Daddy won't believe me."

Every adult in the room turned toward him.

Matteo gently held his son's face.

"What bad man?"

Leo closed his eyes.

"The one who gives me sleepy juice."

My heart stopped.

Matteo's face became unreadable.

"Who?"

Leo pointed toward the empty doorway.

"Uncle Silvio."

That single sentence destroyed ten years of loyalty.

Matteo stood slowly.

His fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white.

Every guard understood immediately.

Silvio hadn't simply betrayed him.

He had betrayed the family.

And in Matteo DeLuca's world...

There was no greater crime.
