Chapter 3: The Birth Certificate

Chapter 3: The Birth Certificate
Valeria didn't leave.
She couldn't.
While Damián sat inside the hospital room holding Yohandra's hand, she remained hidden at the end of the hallway.
Listening.
Thinking.
Trying to understand how her wedding day had transformed into a nightmare.
The little girl sat quietly beside a vending machine, hugging a stuffed rabbit with one missing ear.
Seven years old.
Sofía.
Valeria kept staring at her.
Something didn't fit.
Something felt wrong.
Then she remembered the nurse's words.
The birth certificate.
An hour later, while Damián and Yohandra spoke privately, Sofía wandered into the pediatric waiting area.
Valeria followed.
Not to hurt her.
Not to accuse her.
Only because questions were consuming her.
The child looked exhausted.
Fragile.
Far too young to carry so much sadness.
Valeria sat beside her.
"You love your mother very much, don't you?"
Sofía nodded.
"She's my best friend."
The answer nearly broke her heart.
For a while neither spoke.
Then Sofía reached into her backpack.
A folder slipped out.
Several papers scattered across the floor.
Valeria immediately bent down to help.
That's when she saw it.
A birth certificate.
Folded.
Worn.
Accidentally exposed.
She should have looked away.
She didn't.
Her eyes landed on the father's section.
And froze.
No father listed.
Blank.
Completely blank.
Valeria's heartbeat accelerated.
That made no sense.
If Damián was Sofía's father, why wasn't his name there?
If he wasn't her father...
why had Yohandra kept his photograph for eight years?
Why had Sofía come searching for him?
Why had Yohandra whispered:
"You came."
As if she'd been waiting her entire life?
The questions multiplied.
And none of the answers made sense.
Meanwhile, inside Room 314, Damián finally asked the question haunting him.
"Why wasn't I told?"
Yohandra closed her eyes.
The answer clearly hurt.
"Because I didn't know who to trust anymore."
Damián looked confused.
"What does that mean?"
A single tear escaped down her cheek.
"Your father wasn't acting alone."
The room became very still.
"My father?"
She nodded weakly.
"There was another person."
"Who?"
Yohandra hesitated.
Fear flickered across her face.
The same fear Damián remembered seeing years ago before she vanished.
Then she whispered a name.
A name that made his blood run cold.
"Eduardo."
Damián stood abruptly.
"No."
Yohandra nodded.
"Yes."
His knees nearly gave out.
Because Eduardo wasn't some stranger.
He was Damián's older brother.
The man who had helped raise him.
The man who had stood beside him at countless family celebrations.
The man scheduled to be his best man at the wedding only hours earlier.
Outside the room, thunder rolled across the city.
Rain began striking the windows.
Inside, Damián struggled to breathe.
"What are you saying?"
Yohandra swallowed painfully.
"I'm saying Eduardo knew about the baby."
Damián stared.
She continued.
"And Eduardo wanted me gone."
Every word felt impossible.
Yet something deep inside him suddenly remembered.
Small things.
Forgotten things.
Moments that once seemed meaningless.
Eduardo intercepting phone calls.
Eduardo insisting Yohandra wasn't right for him.
Eduardo claiming she had moved on.
Eduardo always appearing whenever he tried to find answers.
The pieces were starting to fit.
And Damián hated what they were forming.
Then Yohandra reached beneath her pillow.
Her hand emerged holding a tiny silver key.
The same key she had protected for eight years.
"I was saving this."
Damián carefully took it.
"What does it open?"
Yohandra looked toward Sofía through the hospital window.
Then back at him.
"A safety deposit box."
His pulse quickened.
"What's inside?"
She smiled sadly.
"The truth."
Before he could ask another question, alarms suddenly erupted throughout the room.
Machines began beeping wildly.
Nurses rushed inside.
Doctors followed.
Yohandra's heart monitor flashed red.
"Damián..."
Her voice was barely audible.
He grabbed her hand.
"I'm here."
Tears filled her eyes.
"Protect her."
Then her gaze shifted toward the hallway.
Toward Sofía.
Toward her daughter.
The child she had sacrificed everything to protect.
The child carrying a secret bigger than any of them realized.
The doctors pushed Damián aside.
The room exploded into controlled chaos.
Commands.
Machines.
Footsteps.
Urgency.
Fear.
And as the door closed, Damián looked down at the silver key still resting in his palm.
Because somewhere inside that safety deposit box was a truth powerful enough to destroy an entire family.
A truth Yohandra had guarded for eight years.
And judging by the terror in her eyes...
May you like
someone was still willing to do anything to keep it buried.
To Be Continued...
