Chapter 2: The Hospital Room

Chapter 2: The Hospital Room

The hospital door burst open.

The little girl spun around.

So did everyone else.

The groom was already moving before he even realized it.

Running.

Past the rows of stunned wedding guests.

Past the flower arrangements.

Past the bride calling his name.

"Damián!"

But he didn't stop.

Couldn't stop.

Not after hearing a name he hadn't spoken in nearly eight years.

Yohandra.

The woman he once loved.

The woman he thought had abandoned him.

The woman he had spent years trying to forget.

Twenty minutes later, the wedding hall was nearly empty.

Guests whispered in confused clusters.

The bride, Valeria, sat frozen in a chair near the altar.

Her makeup remained flawless.

Her heart did not.

Meanwhile, Damián followed the little girl through the hospital corridors.

The child never let go of his hand.

As if she feared he might disappear.

As if she had already lost too much.

"What is your name?" he asked quietly.

The girl looked up.

"Sofía."

"How old are you?"

"Seven."

Seven.

The number struck him like a hammer.

He quickly did the math.

Then wished he hadn't.

His pulse accelerated.

A terrible possibility was beginning to form.

One he wasn't ready to face.

The elevator doors opened.

Third floor.

Oncology.

The sign alone made his stomach twist.

The little girl led him down a long hallway.

Room 314.

She stopped outside the door.

Suddenly afraid.

Suddenly uncertain.

"Mom doesn't know I came."

Damián frowned.

"What?"

"I heard the doctors talking."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"They said she might not wake up again."

The little girl's voice broke.

"So I found your picture."

She reached into her pocket.

Pulled out the same worn photograph.

The edges were faded from years of being touched.

Years of being kept.

Years of being loved.

Damián recognized it immediately.

It had been taken when he was twenty-two.

The year everything fell apart.

The year Yohandra vanished from his life.

The year she stopped answering his calls.

The year she disappeared.

Without explanation.

Without goodbye.

Without a single word.

Or so he thought.

With trembling fingers, he pushed open the hospital door.

Then froze.

The woman lying in the bed barely resembled the person in his memories.

The vibrant young woman he had once loved was gone.

Illness had stolen weight from her face.

Color from her skin.

Strength from her body.

But not all of her.

Not completely.

Because when he looked into her sleeping face...

he still recognized Yohandra.

A thousand memories flooded back.

First dates.

Late-night walks.

Promises.

Dreams.

A future they once planned together.

All gone.

Or so he believed.

For eight long years.

A nurse quietly entered the room.

She stopped when she saw Damián.

"You know her?"

His voice barely worked.

"Yes."

The nurse hesitated.

Then looked toward Sofía.

"You should know..."

Her expression softened.

"She's been asking for you."

The room spun.

"What?"

The nurse nodded.

"Every day."

Damián stared at her.

"That's impossible."

"She kept your photograph beside her bed."

The nurse pointed toward a drawer.

"There are dozens of letters, too."

His heart stopped.

"Letters?"

The nurse looked confused.

"You never received them?"

Thirty minutes later, Damián sat alone beside Yohandra's bed.

The letters were spread across his lap.

Dozens of them.

Every year.

Every birthday.

Every Christmas.

Every anniversary.

Letters she had written.

Letters she had mailed.

Letters he had never received.

The first one explained everything.

The day she disappeared.

The day she learned she was pregnant.

The day Damián's wealthy father paid her to leave.

Paid her to vanish.

Paid her to disappear from his son's life forever.

And when she refused...

the threats began.

The intimidation.

The legal pressure.

The lies.

Until finally she left to protect the baby growing inside her.

Protecting Sofía.

Protecting Damián.

Destroying herself.

A tear landed on the paper.

Then another.

For eight years he had believed she abandoned him.

For eight years she had believed he never came looking.

Both had been victims of the same lie.

A lie carefully built by someone with money.

Power.

And influence.

His father.

Then a weak voice broke the silence.

"Damián?"

His head snapped upward.

Yohandra's eyes were open.

Barely.

But open.

For a moment neither of them spoke.

Eight years.

Thousands of days.

Millions of regrets.

All standing between them.

Then she smiled weakly.

The same smile he remembered.

The same smile he never forgot.

"You came."

A single sentence.

Enough to shatter both of them.

And outside the room...

unseen by anyone...

Valeria stood in the hallway.

Listening.

Hearing everything.

Including the part about Sofía.

The seven-year-old girl.

And suddenly one terrifying question entered her mind:

If Sofía was seven years old...

and Yohandra left eight years ago...

why did the child's birth certificate list no father?
