CHAPTER 7 — THE FATHER WHO CAME HOME

CHAPTER 7 — THE FATHER WHO CAME HOME

The helicopter blades thundered over the Mercer estate as the first rays of dawn struggled through the storm.

Marcus Mercer stepped out of an unmarked armored SUV.

He wore no tailored suit.

No designer watch.

No symbols of wealth.

Only a black jacket, rain-soaked boots, and the expression of a father who had crossed oceans for one purpose.

Find Lily.

Daniel hurried beside him.

"Federal agents are five minutes away."

Marcus never slowed.

"Then we have five minutes."

Vincent Russo met them at the shattered front entrance.

"I've secured the east wing."

"Gabriel?"

"Alive."

"Lily?"

Vincent hesitated.

"Still in the greenhouse."

Marcus was already moving before the sentence ended.

Inside the ruined greenhouse, Victor Salazar held Lily close with one arm.

A pistol rested lightly against her shoulder.

She was crying silently.

Not screaming.

Marcus stopped twenty feet away.

His heart nearly broke at the sight of her.

"Daddy..."

"I'm here, sweetheart."

Salazar smiled.

"You really crossed an ocean."

Marcus's voice remained calm.

"Let her go."

"You know I can't."

"You've already lost."

Salazar laughed.

"No, Marcus. You still don't understand."

He reached into his coat and tossed a thick envelope onto the wet floor.

Old photographs scattered everywhere.

Marcus stared.

One showed a younger Cassandra shaking hands with Adrian Black.

Another showed Wells meeting government officials.

Another...

Marcus froze.

It showed himself.

Standing beside Adrian twenty years earlier.

Smiling.

Like brothers.

"You spent years believing one story," Salazar said quietly.

"But every story has missing pages."

From behind the greenhouse came slow applause.

Everyone turned.

An elderly man emerged beneath a black umbrella.

His silver hair glistened in the rain.

The same man from the estate outside Mexico City.

Cassandra stepped out behind him.

Her confidence had returned.

She bowed her head slightly.

"Sir."

Marcus stared.

"...Elias."

The old man smiled.

"So you remember."

Daniel whispered in disbelief.

"Elias Black..."

Marcus nodded slowly.

Adrian's father.

A businessman once rumored to control criminal empires stretching across three continents.

Officially, he had disappeared twenty-five years earlier.

Apparently...

Officially was wrong.

"You took my son from me," Elias said.

Marcus answered without anger.

"Adrian chose greed."

"You betrayed him."

"He stole from charities."

"He stole from corrupt men."

"He trafficked children."

For the first time, Elias's smile vanished.

Marcus stepped closer.

"I saw the records."

"I saw the payments."

"I saw the names."

"You saw what someone wanted you to see."

The old man's words echoed through the shattered greenhouse.

"Adrian discovered that politicians, bankers, and traffickers were using charitable foundations to move children across borders."

Marcus frowned.

"He created the evidence."

"No."

Elias looked directly into Marcus's eyes.

"He tried to expose them."

Marcus's certainty cracked.

"What?"

"The fire wasn't to kill Adrian."

"It was to silence him."

Silence swallowed the greenhouse.

Daniel slowly turned toward Wells.

The terrified accountant collapsed to his knees.

"I didn't know..."

Marcus looked at him.

"You signed every transfer."

"They threatened my family!"

"You helped them anyway."

Wells began sobbing.

"It wasn't Adrian."

"It was Cassandra."

Everyone looked at Cassandra.

May you like

She slowly smiled.

"You finally figured it out."
