CHAPTER 5 — THE GHOST WHO REFUSED TO DIE

CHAPTER 5 — THE GHOST WHO REFUSED TO DIE

The name hung in the silence of the jet like a curse.

Adrian Black.

Fifteen years earlier, newspapers had called him a financial genius.

Federal agents had called him untouchable.

Marcus Mercer had called him his brother.

Until betrayal had turned them into enemies.

Daniel finally found his voice.

"We recovered his body."

Marcus stared out at the Atlantic.

"No."

Daniel blinked.

"You identified him yourself."

"I identified a burned corpse wearing Adrian's watch."

A long silence followed.

"The DNA?"

Marcus slowly turned.

"The lab belonged to one of Adrian's companies."

Daniel's stomach dropped.

"My God..."

Marcus's eyes darkened.

"I never proved he died."

Back in Beverly Hills...

Lily ran through the rain-soaked gardens until her lungs burned.

Branches whipped across her face.

Mud covered her bare feet.

She could hear shouting behind her.

Flashlights darted through the darkness.

Then—

A hand grabbed her shoulder.

She screamed.

"It's me!"

Gabriel knelt beside her.

"I found you."

Lily threw herself into his arms.

"I thought you died."

He smiled despite the blood running from a wound across his shoulder.

"It'll take more than one bullet."

Another burst of gunfire echoed behind them.

Gabriel looked toward the woods.

"They're getting closer."

He pressed a small tracking device into Lily's tiny hand.

"If we get separated again, don't throw this away."

"What is it?"

"A promise."

Inside the mansion...

Vincent Russo stood face-to-face with Cassandra.

She no longer smiled.

"You've already lost," she said.

Vincent raised an eyebrow.

"Have I?"

She laughed.

"You think this is about money?"

"No."

"You think it's about Lily?"

"No."

Her smile slowly returned.

"It's about Marcus."

Vincent's expression hardened.

"I know."

Cassandra stepped closer.

"He destroyed people long before he became respectable."

"He also saved people."

"He ruined Adrian Black."

Vincent answered quietly,

"Adrian ruined himself."

"You really believe that?"

Vincent didn't answer.

Because he remembered that night fifteen years ago.

The warehouse fire.

The explosions.

The body.

Too many things had never made sense.

Meanwhile...

Marcus's jet crossed into North American airspace.

Immediately, alarms lit the cockpit.

The pilot turned.

"We've got company."

Two military fighter jets appeared on either side.

The radio crackled.

"Mercer Seven-One, you are flying in violation of federal travel restrictions. Change course immediately."

Marcus picked up the microphone.

"No."

"Repeat?"

"I'm going home."

"Failure to comply will result in interception."

Marcus calmly returned the microphone.

Daniel stared at him.

"Sir..."

Marcus looked at the pilot.

"Keep flying."

The pilot swallowed hard.

"Yes, sir."

At the Mercer estate...

Victor Salazar walked calmly through the gardens.

Bodies of his own men lay scattered across the grass.

He didn't seem to care.

One of his guards approached.

"We lost the girl."

"No."

"We searched everywhere."

Salazar smiled.

"She isn't running anymore."

The guard frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Salazar looked toward the old greenhouse.

"She's hiding."

Inside the abandoned greenhouse...

Lily curled beneath a broken gardening table.

Rain dripped through shattered glass above her.

She covered her mouth to keep from crying.

Then—

Her father's voice came through the phone.

"Lily."

"I'm here."

"I need you to listen carefully."

"I am."

"Do you remember the story I told you about brave people?"

She nodded.

"The one where heroes get scared?"

"Exactly."

She whispered,

"I'm scared."

"I know."

"But brave doesn't mean you're never afraid."

Marcus paused.

"It means you keep going even while you're afraid."

Lily wiped away her tears.

"I can do that."

"I know you can."

Thousands of miles away...

A black sedan entered a heavily guarded estate outside Mexico City.

Inside a candlelit library, an elderly man watched the security monitors.

One screen showed Marcus's jet.

Another showed Lily hiding.

A third showed Cassandra waiting calmly in the mansion.

The old man smiled.

"Everything is happening exactly on schedule."

A servant bowed respectfully.

"Sir..."

"The hunters?"

"They're ready."

"And Marcus?"

"Almost home."

The old man stood.

For the first time, his face became visible.

Not Adrian Black.

Someone much older.

Much colder.

Someone whose photograph had disappeared from public records decades ago.

He picked up an old family photograph.

In it stood two young men.

Marcus Mercer.

Adrian Black.

Between them...

The old man.

Their father.

May you like

He whispered to the photograph,

"It's time both of my sons came home."
