CHAPTER 4: The Widow Who Celebrated Too Soon

CHAPTER 4: The Widow Who Celebrated Too Soon

Vivian Moretti entered Dante's hospital room carrying fresh lilies.

She expected silence.

Instead...

She found Dr. Luca Romano reviewing charts while Mateo Caruso stood beside the bed.

Neither man acknowledged her.

"How is my husband?"

Luca answered without looking up.

"Improving."

Her smile froze.

"I'm sorry?"

"He responded to verbal commands."

Vivian laughed softly.

"Doctor, grief affects everyone differently."

"I'm not grieving."

"I'm examining facts."

"He moved voluntarily."

Vivian's fingers tightened around the flowers.

"That's impossible."

"So was surviving eighteen days according to your neurologist."

For the first time...

Vivian realized she was losing control.

Mateo finally spoke.

His voice was calm.

"Mrs. Moretti."

"Yes?"

"When did you last visit your husband before today?"

"Yesterday."

"No."

She blinked.

"I've been here every day."

Mateo slowly removed a folder from inside his jacket.

"I asked Security."

"They reviewed every camera."

He placed several photographs on the bedside table.

Vivian looked down.

Each image showed hospital entrances.

Parking garages.

Private elevators.

Time stamps.

Her face drained of color.

"You came only four times."

Mateo's eyes never left hers.

"In eighteen days."

Vivian struggled to recover.

"I was exhausted."

"You were busy."

She remained silent.

"Meeting lawyers."

"Meeting bankers."

"Meeting your son's financial advisor."

Each statement landed like a hammer.

"How do you know that?"

Mateo smiled faintly.

"Dante taught me something many years ago."

"What?"

"If someone suddenly becomes patient..."

He stepped closer.

"...they're usually waiting for money."

Elsewhere...

Rachel Doyle sat alone inside the warehouse office.

Dr. Klein entered carrying a leather briefcase.

"You've become a problem."

Rachel burst into tears.

"They know about the pump."

"They're checking everything."

"I never wanted this."

Klein calmly opened the briefcase.

Inside was cash.

Stacks upon stacks.

"And passports."

Rachel stared.

"You can leave tonight."

She reached for the money.

Klein closed the case.

"But first..."

He slid a typed confession across the desk.

It stated that Rachel had acted alone.

That she had altered medications without anyone's knowledge.

That Dr. Klein had discovered the fraud too late.

Rachel looked up.

"This is a lie."

"It will become the truth."

"I won't sign."

Klein sighed.

"I hoped you'd say that."

The office door opened.

Two large men entered.

Neither wore hospital uniforms.

Rachel backed away.

"What are they doing here?"

Klein spoke almost sympathetically.

"You've forgotten something."

"What?"

"Dead witnesses..."

He adjusted his glasses.

"...never change their testimony."

Back at St. Raphael...

Luca received a phone call from Radiology.

"We found something."

"The original scans?"

"No."

"What then?"

"A backup."

"One of our technicians copied the images before they disappeared."

Luca rushed downstairs.

Minutes later...

The scans filled the monitor.

A senior neuroradiologist reviewed them.

After nearly ten minutes, she leaned back in disbelief.

"These aren't consistent with irreversible brain death."

Luca's heart raced.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean..."

She enlarged the images.

"...someone intentionally misread these scans."

She pointed to several active regions.

"His brain still had significant function."

"He had a real chance."

"A very good one."

Luca whispered,

"They buried him alive."

That evening...

Lucia sat beside Dante once more.

She held one of her coloring books.

"I brought you something."

She tore out a page.

It showed a knight standing between a dragon and a little girl.

"I made you the hero."

She gently placed the drawing beside his hand.

"You don't have to fight alone anymore."

A tear slowly escaped from the corner of Dante Moretti's eye.

Lucia smiled.

"I knew you could hear me."

Outside the room...

Mateo witnessed the tear.

The terrifying enforcer who had never cried at funerals...

Quietly turned away.

Because he finally understood one thing.

His best friend had not been abandoned by fate.

He had been betrayed by the people sleeping under his own roof.

And when Dante Moretti opened his eyes...

No amount of money...

No hospital...

May you like

No politician...

Would be able to stop the reckoning that was coming.
