CHAPTER 3: The Man Everyone Thought Was Already Dead

CHAPTER 3: The Man Everyone Thought Was Already Dead

The heart monitor emitted a different rhythm.

Not louder.

Not faster.

Different.

Dr. Luca Romano leaned over the bed so quickly that the rolling stool tipped backward and crashed against the wall.

"Nurse!"

The charge nurse hurried inside.

"What happened?"

"Don't touch anything."

Luca pointed toward Dante's right hand.

"Watch his index finger."

Everyone stared.

For several endless seconds, nothing happened.

Then—

A slight tremor.

Almost invisible.

The finger curled against the sheet.

The nurse gasped.

"My God..."

Luca immediately performed another neurological examination.

"Dante."

He spoke clearly.

"If you can hear me, move your finger again."

Nothing.

He repeated the command.

"Mr. Moretti, squeeze my hand."

The room became painfully silent.

Outside, thunder rolled across Manhattan.

Then...

A faint pressure.

Weak.

Barely enough to bend Luca's finger.

But it was there.

Not a reflex.

A response.

Luca's pulse pounded.

"He understands."

The charge nurse covered her mouth.

"He's conscious."

"Locked in," Luca corrected quietly.

"He can't move his body, but he's hearing us."

The words struck everyone like a lightning bolt.

For eighteen days, doctors had spoken around Dante as though he were already gone.

For eighteen days, conversations about withdrawing treatment, funeral arrangements, business succession, and inheritance had taken place beside a man who could hear every word.

Luca felt sick.

Across the hall...

Mateo Caruso watched Security escort Rachel Doyle toward an interview room.

She struggled to appear calm.

"I've done nothing wrong."

The head of hospital security remained expressionless.

"Then you'll have no problem answering a few questions."

Rachel looked desperately toward the elevator.

She wasn't looking for an escape.

She was hoping someone would arrive first.

Someone powerful.

Someone who could make this disappear.

Instead...

She saw Vivian Moretti walking down the corridor.

Their eyes met for only a second.

Rachel silently begged for help.

Vivian never slowed her pace.

She walked past as though the nurse were a complete stranger.

Rachel understood immediately.

She had just been sacrificed.

Inside the executive lounge...

Vivian closed the door.

Adrian was pacing frantically.

"You said Klein controlled everything."

"He did."

"Then why is Security questioning Rachel?"

Vivian remained eerily composed.

"Because panic creates mistakes."

"And what do we do?"

She poured herself a glass of water.

"We let Rachel take the blame."

Adrian stared.

"That's your plan?"

"My plan," Vivian replied coolly, "is survival."

"But she knows about us."

Vivian looked directly into his eyes.

"So do many people."

"What if she talks?"

"Then she won't live long enough to finish the sentence."

Adrian swallowed.

Even after all these years...

His mother still frightened him.

Meanwhile...

Luca requested Dante's original laboratory reports.

The hospital archivist frowned.

"Doctor..."

"There's something odd."

"What?"

"The blood samples."

"What about them?"

"The barcode numbers don't match."

Luca's eyes narrowed.

"Explain."

"The samples listed in the medical record..."

She hesitated.

"...were never processed by our laboratory."

"What?"

"They belong to another patient."

Silence.

Luca slowly looked back toward Dante's room.

Someone hadn't merely altered medications.

Someone had fabricated laboratory evidence.

That meant conspiracy.

Not negligence.

Not malpractice.

Conspiracy.

Hospital CEO Margaret Holloway arrived twenty minutes later.

Her expression was grim.

"Dr. Romano."

"You requested immediate administrative review?"

"I did."

He handed her the photographs from his phone.

"The infusion pump was manipulated."

"The records were falsified."

"The scans disappeared."

"The laboratory reports were altered."

Margaret read each page carefully.

When she finished...

She looked older than before.

"If this is true..."

"It is."

"Our hospital..."

She couldn't finish the sentence.

Luca answered for her.

"...has been helping someone murder a patient."

At the same moment...

Forty floors away...

A black SUV stopped beside an abandoned warehouse in Brooklyn.

Rachel Doyle sat in the back seat.

Her hands trembled.

The man beside her wasn't police.

He wore an expensive charcoal suit.

No tie.

No expression.

Rachel recognized him immediately.

Victor Salerno.

One of Dante Moretti's senior captains.

"You wanted to talk," Victor said.

Rachel nodded rapidly.

"I'll tell you everything."

"You'll protect me?"

Victor looked out the window.

"That depends."

"On what?"

"Whether you start talking..."

He turned toward her.

"...before someone else arrives."

Rachel frowned.

"What do you mean?"

A second black SUV pulled into the lot.

Victor sighed.

"Too late."

The passenger door opened.

Dr. Nathaniel Klein stepped out.

Rachel's face lost all color.
