CHAPTER 5: THE TRUTH BURIED IN THE RAIN

CHAPTER 5: THE TRUTH BURIED IN THE RAIN

No one breathed.

The charity gala, moments earlier filled with laughter and camera flashes, fell into absolute silence.

Rebecca stared at Adriano as though the entire world had disappeared around them.

Her voice trembled.

"...You knew Thomas?"

Adriano's lips parted.

For years he had imagined this moment.

He had rehearsed explanations.

Apologies.

Confessions.

Yet now, standing before the widow of the man who had died because of him, every word abandoned him.

Genevieve stepped forward before he could answer.

"What ridiculous nonsense."

She forced a laugh.

"A four-year-old child invents a story, and suddenly everyone forgets why we're here?"

The guests looked uncertain.

Some nodded.

Others exchanged uneasy glances.

Genevieve grabbed Clementine gently—but firmly—by the shoulder.

"Children dream strange things."

Clementine pulled away.

"I wasn't dreaming."

"You were a baby," Genevieve said coldly.

"You couldn't remember."

The little girl frowned.

"I remember because Daddy was cold."

Rebecca felt her knees weaken.

Only one person had ever told Clementine that Thomas's hands had been cold.

Rebecca herself.

Late at night.

While rocking her daughter to sleep.

No one else had been there.

No one.

So...

How could Clementine possibly know about another man standing in the rain?

Adriano finally spoke.

"Rebecca..."

His voice was lower than anyone had ever heard.

"I owe you the truth."

Genevieve's head snapped toward him.

"Adriano."

He ignored her.

"Thomas wasn't supposed to die."

Rebecca stared without blinking.

"I don't understand."

"He wasn't the target."

A murmur spread through the guests.

The cameras were still recording.

Journalists looked at one another, unsure whether to stop filming or keep going.

Adriano continued.

"The attack was meant for me."

Rebecca's face turned pale.

"What... attack?"

"Three years ago, men working for a rival organization followed the wrong truck."

His breathing became uneven.

"They believed Thomas was driving one of my security vehicles."

Rebecca shook her head.

"No..."

"They forced him off the road."

"No."

"I reached him before the ambulance."

Rebecca stumbled backward.

"No!"

"He was still alive."

"STOP!"

Her scream echoed through the estate.

Every guest froze.

Tears poured down her face.

"You were there?"

Adriano lowered his head.

"Yes."

"You watched him die?"

"Yes."

"And you never came to tell me?"

The question hit harder than any bullet Adriano had ever faced.

"I searched for you."

Rebecca laughed.

It wasn't a joyful sound.

It was broken.

Shattered.

"I buried my husband alone."

Another laugh.

"My daughter grew up without a father."

She took another step backward.

"I sold our wedding rings to buy baby formula."

Another tear.

"I slept in my car."

She looked directly into Adriano's eyes.

"And all this time..."

Her voice cracked completely.

"...I've been cleaning your floors."

Genevieve watched the scene unfold with growing irritation rather than sympathy.

She cared only about one thing.

The cameras.

This scandal threatened the carefully polished image she had spent years creating.

She turned toward the media coordinator.

"Turn those cameras off immediately."

No one moved.

Instead...

Every lens pointed toward Adriano.

Toward Rebecca.

Toward history unfolding in real time.

Adriano slowly removed his jacket.

He walked toward Rebecca.

Then...

To everyone's disbelief...

The most feared crime boss in New England knelt before the maid.

One knee against the stone.

Head lowered.

"I cannot return Thomas."

His voice shook.

"I cannot erase what happened."

Silence.

"But I will spend the rest of my life paying a debt that can never truly be repaid."

Rebecca looked at him for a long time.

Then quietly answered,

"I don't want your money."

"I know."

"I wanted my husband."

Those words destroyed whatever remained of Adriano's composure.

For the first time in decades...

He cried openly.

Not from fear.

Not from pain.

From guilt.

That evening, every major news station in Rhode Island carried the same headline.

CRIME EMPIRE LEADER PUBLICLY ADMITS RESPONSIBILITY IN WIDOW'S TRAGEDY.

The story spread across the country within hours.

Inside the mansion...

Nothing would ever be the same again.

Genevieve sat alone in her private sitting room, watching the news in silence.

The reporters praised Adriano's honesty.

His remorse.

His humanity.

Not one headline mentioned Genevieve's charity work.

Not one photograph showed her.

She slammed the television off.

Her breathing became ragged.

Then...

She called someone.

A number she had not dialed in years.

The voice answered immediately.

"I wondered when you'd finally need me."

Genevieve's expression hardened.

"I have a problem."

The man chuckled.

"Rebecca Hail?"

Genevieve froze.

"You know her?"

"I know much more than that."

"Then come to Rhode Island."

A pause.

May you like

Finally...

"I think it's time Adriano learned who his wife really married."
