CHAPTER 4: THE LITTLE GIRL WHO REMEMBERED A STRANGER

CHAPTER 4: THE LITTLE GIRL WHO REMEMBERED A STRANGER

The following Saturday, the Falcone estate hosted its annual children's charity gala.

Television cameras lined the entrance.

Luxury cars stretched nearly half a mile down the private drive.

Politicians.

Business executives.

Judges.

Professional athletes.

Movie producers.

Nearly two hundred guests filled the gardens.

The event raised millions every year for children's hospitals.

Everyone praised Genevieve's generosity.

No one saw the irony.

Rebecca had been awake since four o'clock.

She ironed tablecloths.

Arranged flowers.

Prepared desserts.

Polished crystal glasses until her fingertips bled.

By noon...

She could barely stand.

Still...

She smiled whenever Clementine peeked from the kitchen doorway.

"Almost done, sweetheart."

Clementine grinned.

"I made you something."

Rebecca laughed softly.

"What is it this time?"

"A surprise."

Meanwhile...

Genevieve prepared for the cameras.

Every movement was practiced.

Every smile rehearsed.

Every charitable speech memorized.

She loved applause almost as much as she loved control.

Then she noticed Clementine wandering near the rose garden.

An idea formed instantly.

Cruel.

Simple.

Perfect.

She approached the little girl with exaggerated sweetness.

"Clementine."

The child looked up nervously.

"Would you like some cake?"

The little girl nodded.

Genevieve pointed toward the front lawn.

"Go ask your mommy to bring you a piece."

"My mommy said she's working."

"I'm giving you permission."

Clementine smiled and ran happily across the lawn.

Straight toward Rebecca.

Unfortunately...

Straight into the middle of a live television interview.

Rebecca had just carried a silver tray behind Genevieve when Clementine wrapped tiny arms around her waist.

"Mommy!"

Every camera turned.

Genevieve slowly removed her microphone.

Her face hardened.

"What is this?"

Rebecca immediately knelt.

"I'm so sorry, ma'am."

"I told her not to come—"

Genevieve interrupted.

"You brought your child into my event?"

"No!"

Rebecca looked horrified.

"I would never—"

SLAP.

The sound echoed across the garden.

Rebecca's face snapped sideways.

Two hundred people watched.

Silence.

Complete silence.

Genevieve lowered her hand calmly.

"I said servants' children belong out of sight."

Clementine screamed.

"Don't hurt my mommy!"

She threw herself between them.

Tiny arms stretched wide.

Shielding Rebecca.

The cameras continued recording.

No one dared stop them.

Then...

Something impossible happened.

Clementine looked directly at Adriano.

Who had just stepped out onto the terrace.

The little girl tilted her head.

Studied his face.

Then whispered words that froze his blood.

"It's you..."

Adriano stopped walking.

Clementine smiled uncertainly.

"You were in the rain."

Rebecca stared at her daughter.

"What are you talking about, sweetheart?"

The child pointed toward Adriano.

"He cried."

Every sound vanished from the garden.

Adriano's heart hammered.

Impossible.

She had been only a baby.

Clementine continued innocently,

"When Daddy was sleeping."

Rebecca's face lost all color.

"What did you say?"

"The tall man cried."

She looked at Adriano again.

"You held Daddy's hand."

A champagne glass slipped from someone's fingers.

It shattered against the stone.

Rebecca slowly stood.

Her eyes never left Adriano.

"You..."

Her voice barely existed.

"Were you there?"

Adriano could not answer.

Because for the first time in three years...

May you like

The truth had found him.

And there was no escaping it anymore.
