CHAPTER 7 — THE TRUTH ELIZABETH DIED TO PROTECT

CHAPTER 7 — THE TRUTH ELIZABETH DIED TO PROTECT

Smoke curled from the ruined laptop.

No one spoke.

Marcus stared at the black screen in disbelief.

"That's impossible."

William's voice was cold.

"Nothing is impossible anymore."

He picked up the damaged microSD card.

The plastic casing had melted, but the memory chip inside looked intact.

Marcus frowned.

"It may still be recoverable."

"How?"

"I know one person."

An hour later, the Hayes family helicopter landed on a small private airstrip outside Seattle.

Marcus led them to a quiet warehouse with no company logos.

Inside waited an elderly engineer named Daniel Brooks.

For twenty-five years he had worked in military digital forensics before disappearing into private consulting.

He examined the chip beneath a microscope.

"It wasn't destroyed."

William leaned forward.

"Can you recover it?"

Daniel smiled faintly.

"They erased the file."

"But they forgot one thing."

"Deleting isn't the same as destroying."

Three tense hours passed.

Finally—

A progress bar reached one hundred percent.

The recovered video appeared.

Elizabeth Hayes smiled into the camera once again.

But this time...

The recording continued.

"William...

If you're watching this, I couldn't stop them.

I tried."

She looked exhausted.

There were dark circles beneath her eyes.

"They've been stealing billions through government technology contracts."

"They're using Hayes Horizon's software."

William's face drained of color.

"What?"

Emma looked at him.

"You didn't know?"

William shook his head.

"I built the platform."

"I never controlled every contract."

Elizabeth continued.

"Someone inside your executive team changed everything after your approval."

"I found proof."

"They discovered I knew."

She paused.

"If anything happens to me...

don't blame yourself."

William's eyes filled with tears.

Elizabeth took a deep breath.

"The man responsible is someone you trust."

A photograph appeared beside her.

William froze.

"No..."

Emma looked at the screen.

The man smiling beside William at a charity gala...

was Richard Caldwell.

William's oldest friend.

His college roommate.

Godfather to Toby.

Chief Operating Officer of Hayes Horizon.

The man William had trusted for fifteen years.

Elizabeth whispered one final sentence.

"Richard didn't just steal your company."

"He ordered my murder."

The video ended.

Silence swallowed the room.

William slowly sat down.

His entire life had just collapsed.

Marcus spoke first.

"We call the FBI."

William nodded.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

"If Richard has people inside federal investigations..."

"...we don't know who we can trust."

Emma quietly asked,

"So what do we do?"

William looked out the warehouse window.

"For the first time in five years..."

"...we stop running."

Meanwhile...

Across Seattle...

Richard Caldwell watched live drone footage of the warehouse.

His expensive suit remained perfectly pressed.

He calmly sipped coffee.

"They recovered it."

One of his men nodded.

"Yes, sir."

Richard smiled.

"Good."

The man frowned.

"You wanted them to?"

"I wanted William to know."

"Why?"

Richard looked toward the city skyline.

"Because hopeless men make mistakes."

May you like

He stood.

"It's time to finish the Hayes family."
