CHAPTER 5 — THE SHOT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 5 — THE SHOT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The red laser dot trembled over William Hayes's chest.

For a split second, no one breathed.

Then Emma moved.

"DOWN!"

She threw herself into William just as the kitchen windows exploded inward.

CRACK!

The rifle shot tore through the air where William had been standing a heartbeat earlier.

Glass rained across the marble floor.

Toby screamed.

Security agents rushed into the room with weapons drawn.

"Protect Mr. Hayes!"

"Move! Move!"

The mansion erupted into controlled chaos.

William pushed Emma behind the granite island.

"Stay with Toby."

"What about you?"

"They're here for me."

"No," Sarah Donovan gasped, clutching her side where a shard of glass had cut her. "They're here for the evidence."

William looked toward the envelope lying on the floor.

The photographs had scattered everywhere.

One of the attackers had not missed by accident.

The shot had been aimed directly at the evidence.

Outside, black SUVs smashed through the front gate.

Masked men poured onto the estate with military precision.

This wasn't a robbery.

It wasn't a kidnapping.

It was an operation.

The attackers ignored expensive cars, priceless artwork, and open doors.

They headed straight toward the east wing.

Toward William's private office.

As if they knew exactly what they wanted.

Captain Marcus Reed, head of Hayes Security, barked orders through his headset.

"Lock down the vault."

"Seal every exit."

"No one leaves alive."

William grabbed his arm.

"I want one captured."

Marcus nodded.

"We'll do our best."

Emma held Toby tightly as he buried his face against her shoulder.

"It's okay," she whispered.

"No, it isn't," Toby cried.

"They found us."

Emma frowned.

"What do you mean?"

The boy looked horrified that he had spoken aloud.

He quickly covered his mouth.

William heard him.

"Toby."

His voice softened.

"What did you mean?"

The child slowly shook his head.

"I can't."

"Why not?"

"They said..."

His breathing became uneven.

"They said Daddy would die if I told."

Emma's heart stopped.

William knelt despite the gunfire echoing outside.

"Who said that?"

Toby closed his eyes.

"The man with the snake ring."

Silence.

Sarah looked up so suddenly she nearly fell.

"The snake ring..."

She whispered the words like a nightmare returning.

William noticed.

"You know him?"

Sarah nodded weakly.

"I saw him at the crash site."

"He wasn't rescue."

"He wasn't police."

"He arrived before everyone."

Her voice trembled.

"He took something from the wreckage."

"What?"

"The memory card."

William felt a wave of nausea.

Elizabeth had been carrying evidence.

Someone had recovered it before investigators arrived.

Someone powerful enough to rewrite an entire federal investigation.

A loud explosion shook the ceiling.

Marcus's voice crackled through William's earpiece.

"They're inside."

William's eyes hardened.

"They'll never reach Toby."

Three armed men burst through the dining room doors.

The first barely raised his rifle before Marcus dropped him with a precise shot.

The second dove behind a column.

The third sprinted toward the kitchen.

Toward Toby.

Emma didn't think.

She grabbed the heavy cast-iron skillet sitting on the stove.

As the attacker reached across the island—

She swung with every ounce of strength she possessed.

The skillet connected with his wrist.

The rifle clattered across the floor.

Marcus tackled the man before he could recover.

Within seconds, security had him pinned to the ground.

William walked over.

Removed the man's mask.

He had never seen the face before.

But he immediately noticed one thing.

On the man's right hand...

A silver ring.

A coiled black snake.

Exactly as Toby had described.

William crouched.

"Who sent you?"

The man smiled.

"You already know."

William struck him once across the face.

"Who?"

The smile only widened.

"You spent five years looking in the wrong direction."

Blood trickled from the corner of the man's mouth.

"Your wife wasn't killed because of your company."

William froze.

"It was because of what she discovered."

Before anyone could stop him—

The man bit down hard.

A hidden cyanide capsule shattered between his teeth.

Within seconds...

He was dead.

The room fell silent.

Emma looked away.

Toby began crying again.

William stared at the lifeless body.

This had never been about business.

Someone had just proven they would rather kill their own people than allow them to speak.

That night, after police secured the mansion, William sat alone in Elizabeth's old study.

Emma found him staring at a family photograph.

"I almost lost him today."

His voice was barely audible.

"I've spent years believing money could protect Toby."

Emma quietly sat across from him.

"It protected his body."

William looked at her.

"But not his heart."

For the first time...

William Hayes didn't argue.

Just after midnight, Sarah knocked softly on the study door.

"I remembered something."

William stood immediately.

"What?"

"The memory card..."

She swallowed.

"...Elizabeth made a copy."

William's eyes widened.

"A copy?"

Sarah nodded.

"She told me..."

"'If anything happens to me...'"

"...'someone very small already knows where to find it.'"

William and Emma looked at each other.

Very small.

May you like

There was only one person Elizabeth could have meant.

Toby.
