CHAPTER 7 — THE PRESS CONFERENCE THAT DESTROYED AN EMPIRE

CHAPTER 7 — THE PRESS CONFERENCE THAT DESTROYED AN EMPIRE
By sunset, the story had escaped the forty-third floor.
No one knew exactly who leaked it.
Perhaps a frightened attorney.
Perhaps an IT employee.
Perhaps someone inside the Shin family who had finally grown tired of protecting a lie.
By six o'clock, every financial newsroom in Manhattan carried the same headline.
SHIN GLOBAL DIVORCE HALTED AFTER ALLEGED PATERNITY FRAUD.
By seven...
Television helicopters circled Shin Global Tower.
Reporters flooded the streets below.
Black SUVs carrying lawyers lined the entrance.
Shareholders demanded emergency meetings.
Board members called one another in panic.
The empire Hana Shin had spent thirty years building was beginning to crack.
Not because of money.
Because of trust.
Inside the executive boardroom, dozens of phones vibrated at once.
The lead attorney looked pale.
"Sir..."
Joon didn't answer.
"The Board wants an emergency statement."
Silence.
"Investors are threatening legal action."
Nothing.
"The media already knows."
Finally...
Joon looked toward the window overlooking Manhattan.
Five years ago...
He had lost a family.
Tonight...
He might lose an empire.
For the first time...
He knew which one mattered more.
He buttoned his jacket.
"Prepare the press room."
Every lawyer looked up.
"You'll make a statement?"
"Yes."
One attorney hurried forward.
"We strongly advise against answering personal questions."
Joon looked at him calmly.
"For five years, everyone answered personal questions for me."
"That ends tonight."
Thirty minutes later...
More than two hundred reporters packed Shin Global's media auditorium.
National networks.
International newspapers.
Financial journalists.
Crime reporters.
Lifestyle magazines.
Every camera pointed toward the stage.
No one expected what happened next.
The doors opened.
Joon Shin walked in.
Not alone.
Beside him walked Elena.
Holding Yuna's hand.
The room exploded with camera flashes.
Questions came from every direction.
"Mr. Shin!"
"Is the child yours?"
"Did your family fake DNA records?"
"Are criminal charges coming?"
"Is Chairwoman Shin resigning?"
Joon raised one hand.
Silence gradually returned.
He stepped to the microphone.
For several long seconds...
He simply looked at the reporters.
Then he said quietly,
"My name is Joon Shin."
"And today..."
"I learned that I have spent five years believing a lie."
No prepared speech.
No public relations script.
No corporate language.
Just truth.
He continued.
"My daughter..."
He looked toward Yuna.
"...was never hidden from me."
"She was hidden by people I trusted."
Gasps spread through the room.
"I failed her."
"I failed her mother."
"I failed to question evidence that should have been questioned."
"I accepted convenient answers instead of difficult truth."
He paused.
Emotion caught in his throat.
"I cannot recover the birthdays I missed."
"The first words."
"The first steps."
"The bedtime stories."
"But I will spend the rest of my life making sure she never doubts that her father came back the moment he learned the truth."
The auditorium fell completely silent.
Even veteran reporters lowered their cameras.
Then Joon turned toward Elena.
In front of the entire world...
He bowed.
A full Korean bow.
Ninety degrees.
The billionaire.
The mafia boss.
The most powerful man in the room.
Bowing to the woman he had failed.
"I'm sorry."
The cameras never stopped flashing.
Neither did Elena's tears.
An hour later...
Chairwoman Hana Shin submitted her resignation.
The Board accepted it unanimously.
Federal investigators announced a formal criminal inquiry into evidence tampering and obstruction of justice.

The empire survived.
Its queen did not.
