CHAPTER 7 – OPERATION PHOENIX FALL

CHAPTER 7 – OPERATION PHOENIX FALL

The image of the crying little girl haunted everyone in the command center.

For Daniel Carter, it became a promise.

No child would be left behind.

Within twenty-four hours, the FBI assembled one of the largest joint operations in its history.

Federal agents.

U.S. Marshals.

State police.

Cybercrime specialists.

Financial investigators.

Carter Global's elite security division.

The operation received one name:

Operation Phoenix Fall.

While agents searched every lead, Daniel's cybersecurity team worked around the clock to trace the mysterious video transmission.

At dawn, one analyst suddenly stood up.

"I've got him!"

Every head turned.

"It wasn't live."

"What?"

"The video was delayed by eleven minutes."

Helen Brooks frowned.

"So?"

"He made one mistake."

The analyst enlarged a reflection in a steel cabinet behind the mysterious man.

A train crossed in the background.

Freight number 7419.

The timing matched only one rail line in the country.

An abandoned industrial district outside Pittsburgh.

Daniel didn't wait.

"Let's move."

Three hours later...

More than one hundred federal officers silently surrounded an abandoned pharmaceutical warehouse.

The building looked deserted.

Broken windows.

Rusted gates.

Collapsed loading docks.

But thermal drones told another story.

Dozens of heat signatures.

Children.

Armed guards.

Someone whispered,

"This is it."

Helen gave the order.

"Go."

The explosion shattered the front entrance.

Flash-bangs illuminated the darkness.

"FBI!"

"Hands where we can see them!"

Gunfire erupted.

The criminal organization fought desperately.

Daniel stayed behind the tactical teams.

He wasn't there for revenge.

He was there for the children.

Deep inside the warehouse...

Steel doors lined a long underground hallway.

Each one locked electronically.

Agents forced them open one by one.

Inside...

Children.

Some sleeping.

Some crying.

Some too frightened to move.

One little boy covered his face.

"Please don't send me back."

An FBI agent knelt.

"No one's sending you anywhere."

"You're going home."

Room after room opened.

Thirty-two children.

Then thirty-six.

Then forty-one.

Every rescue made Daniel realize how enormous Rebecca's conspiracy had become.

Meanwhile...

The mysterious leader watched everything through security cameras.

He smiled.

"So..."

"You found me."

He pressed a button.

The entire building began flashing red.

Self-destruct countdown.

Ten minutes.

Explosive charges hidden throughout the tunnels.

Helen shouted,

"Evacuate!"

Agents began carrying children outside.

Daniel refused to leave.

"There are still rooms we haven't checked."

His flashlight caught something unusual.

A steel elevator.

Hidden behind concrete.

"No..."

He forced the doors apart.

Below...

Another level.

Far larger.

Rows of medical equipment.

Hospital beds.

Operating rooms.

File cabinets.

The real headquarters.

There, tied to a chair...

sat Dr. Michael Graves.

The bearded man.

Alive.

Terrified.

Daniel cut his restraints.

"Where is your boss?"

Graves laughed weakly.

"You'll never catch him."

Daniel leaned closer.

"You've got one chance."

Graves looked toward the ceiling.

"The helicopter."

Daniel's eyes widened.

Outside...

A black helicopter lifted from the warehouse roof.

The mastermind was escaping.

Daniel sprinted outside.

"No!"

The aircraft climbed higher.

Too high.

Then—

A deafening roar echoed overhead.

Two FBI helicopters appeared from behind the hills.

The chase had already begun.

For fifteen tense minutes, helicopters raced across the Pennsylvania skyline.

Finally...

The fugitive pilot made a fatal mistake.

Trying to avoid federal aircraft, he clipped a radio tower.

The helicopter spun wildly before crashing into an empty field.

When agents reached the wreckage...

The mastermind was still alive.

Barely.

Helen pulled off his oxygen mask.

The entire team stared.

Daniel's face turned white.

"I know you..."

The man smiled through blood.

"Of course you do."

It was William Hawthorne.

Daniel's former business partner.

The man everyone believed had died in a private plane crash fifteen years earlier.

Everything suddenly made sense.

William had faked his own death.

Rebecca had learned from the master.

Before losing consciousness, William whispered one final sentence.

May you like

"You trusted the wrong family..."

Then he died.
