CHAPTER 5 – THE CABIN THAT HELD EVERY SECRET

CHAPTER 5 – THE CABIN THAT HELD EVERY SECRET

Snow began falling as Rebecca Carter was pulled from the black SUV in handcuffs.

She didn't scream.

She didn't beg.

She simply looked at Daniel with a strange smile.

"You've already lost."

Daniel stared at her.

"My son is alive."

Rebecca laughed softly.

"You think Ethan was the only secret?"

Those words stopped everyone.

The FBI agents exchanged quick glances.

Daniel stepped closer.

"What does that mean?"

Rebecca leaned toward him.

"If you want answers..."

"You'd better hurry."

An hour later, a convoy of federal agents, Carter Security, and state police sped toward the mountain cabin.

The GPS trail from Rebecca's vehicle led through miles of frozen forest.

No one spoke.

Daniel sat beside Ethan in the armored SUV.

The little boy rested against him, exhausted.

"Daddy?"

"Yeah, buddy?"

"Are we going back there?"

Daniel looked out the window.

"No."

"We're going to end it."

When the convoy reached the cabin...

The front door hung open.

Daniel's heart sank.

"We're too late."

FBI agents rushed inside.

The rooms had been destroyed.

Furniture overturned.

Computers smashed.

Cabinets emptied.

Someone had spent hours wiping away evidence.

An agent cursed.

"They cleaned this place."

Another called from upstairs.

"Nothing in the bedrooms."

The basement was empty.

The attic was empty.

Even the surveillance cameras had been ripped from the walls.

Rebecca had sent someone ahead.

Daniel stood in Ethan's old room.

A tiny mattress lay on the floor.

The wallpaper was covered with childish pencil drawings.

Days.

Months.

Little marks scratched into the wall.

Someone had counted time.

Seven hundred and twelve marks.

Daniel ran trembling fingers across them.

Every line represented a day his son had waited.

A day Daniel believed Ethan was dead.

He closed his eyes.

"I'm sorry..."

"Daddy?"

Ethan quietly stepped inside.

"I slept here."

Daniel knelt.

"I know."

The boy pointed toward the closet.

"I wasn't allowed to open it."

The FBI agent nearby shrugged.

"It's empty."

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

"The floor."

Everyone looked down.

The wooden planks appeared ordinary.

But Ethan insisted.

"The bearded man always stood there."

"He never let Aunt Rebecca touch it."

Daniel's instincts ignited.

"Pry it open."

Minutes later...

A crowbar lifted the old floorboards.

Beneath them...

A hidden steel hatch.

The room went silent.

An FBI bomb technician carefully unlocked it.

Inside...

Not cash.

Not weapons.

Boxes.

Dozens of waterproof document boxes.

An evidence technician opened the first one.

Then froze.

"Oh my God..."

Daniel walked over.

Inside were birth certificates.

Passports.

Medical files.

Death certificates.

Children's photographs.

Hundreds of them.

Not Ethan's.

Different children.

Different names.

Different states.

An FBI supervisor slowly removed one file.

"It can't be..."

He looked at Daniel.

"This isn't about one kidnapping."

Another agent opened a second box.

Hard drives.

USB drives.

Financial ledgers.

Encrypted notebooks.

Lists of payments.

Millions of dollars.

Transfers routed through shell companies.

Every transaction linked to one foundation.

The Carter Children's Hope Foundation.

Daniel stared in disbelief.

His own charity.

The foundation created after Ethan's "death."

The foundation Rebecca had insisted on managing while Daniel buried himself in grief.

His stomach turned.

"My God..."

She hadn't only stolen his son.

She had used Ethan's supposed death to build a criminal empire.

Then another discovery.

An old cassette recorder.

Still intact.

The technician inserted fresh batteries.

Static filled the room.

Then voices.

Rebecca.

And another man.

"We've moved another child."

"Good."

"The parents?"

"They believe she's dead."

A pause.

"And Carter?"

"He still visits the grave every Sunday."

Rebecca laughed.

"As long as he mourns..."

"...he'll never investigate."

Daniel's knees nearly gave out.

The room fell into horrified silence.

The FBI director looked directly at Daniel.

"Mr. Carter..."

"This may be one of the largest child trafficking conspiracies we've seen in decades."

Daniel whispered,

"Find every child."

Meanwhile...

Three hundred miles away...

News of Rebecca's arrest exploded across national television.

Headlines flashed.

BILLIONAIRE'S SISTER LINKED TO FAKE DEATH SCHEME

CHILD FOUND ALIVE AFTER YEAR-LONG DECEPTION

But another man watched the broadcast from a penthouse office.

He slowly turned off the television.

"So..."

He smiled coldly.

"Rebecca got caught."

He picked up a secure satellite phone.

"It's time."

"We activate Protocol Black."
