CHAPTER 6 – THE MAN WHO STOPPED BEING A BILLIONAIRE

CHAPTER 6 – THE MAN WHO STOPPED BEING A BILLIONAIRE

The scream echoed through the empty church.

Callaway grabbed Annie before she could reach the front doors.

She kicked.

Scratched.

Bit his wrist.

"You little—"

He slapped his hand over her mouth.

"No one is coming."

Outside...

Three blocks away...

Richard's convoy raced through traffic.

Helen sat beside him.

"I think this is the place."

Richard's phone rang.

It was Daniel.

"Sir!"

"What?"

"We tracked Callaway's phone."

"Where?"

Daniel's voice rose.

"St. Matthew's Church!"

Richard slammed the dashboard.

"Drive!"

The driver buried the accelerator.

Inside the church...

Callaway dragged Annie toward a side exit.

"You've caused enough problems."

Tears streamed down Annie's face.

"I just want my grandma."

"You should have stayed invisible."

Suddenly—

CRASH!

The front doors exploded inward.

Richard Whitmore didn't wait for security.

He didn't wait for police.

He didn't wait for anyone.

At seventy years old...

The billionaire sprinted down the church aisle.

"GET AWAY FROM HER!"

Callaway shoved Annie aside and lunged toward a rear hallway.

Richard chased him.

Years of expensive suits and boardrooms disappeared.

In that moment...

He was simply an old man trying to save a child.

Callaway reached the back stairs.

Richard tackled him.

Both men crashed through rotten wooden railings.

They hit the floor hard.

Callaway swung wildly.

Richard took the punch.

Then another.

Security officers finally poured into the building.

Within seconds...

Callaway was pinned to the ground in handcuffs.

Richard ignored him completely.

He turned toward Annie.

She stood trembling behind a pew.

"He's gone."

Richard slowly knelt.

"You're safe."

The little girl burst into tears.

She ran across the aisle and threw herself into his arms.

"I thought she'd hurt you."

Richard hugged her tightly.

"No one is hurting either of us again."

Minutes later...

Police searched Callaway's car.

One detective called Richard over.

"Sir..."

"You need to see this."

Inside the trunk...

They found dozens of tenant files.

Eviction notices.

Bank records.

Cash.

And a locked metal box.

When officers forced it open...

The entire case changed.

Inside were flash drives.

Ledgers.

Signed agreements.

Payments from luxury developers.

A notebook labeled:

SPECIAL RELOCATION PROJECT

Every page contained names.

Mostly elderly tenants.

Widows.

Disabled veterans.

Single parents.

Each name had one word written beside it.

"Removed."

Richard's hands trembled.

"How many?"

The detective answered quietly.

"So far..."

"...two hundred and eighteen families."

That evening...

Victoria Whitmore was arrested in the lobby of her own corporate headquarters.

Television cameras captured everything.

She remained composed until she saw Richard standing across the street with Annie beside him.

For the first time...

Victoria looked afraid.

She shouted across the police barricade.

"Richard!"

He didn't answer.

"You don't understand!"

Still nothing.

"They would have taken everything from us!"

Richard finally spoke.

"No."

His voice was calm.

"You took everything from them."

The police car door closed.

Victoria disappeared behind dark tinted windows.

As the convoy drove away...

Annie quietly slipped her small hand into Richard's.

He looked down.

She whispered the question she had been afraid to ask since the night in the barn.

"Am I homeless now?"

Richard felt his throat tighten.

He looked toward the setting sun.

Then back at the frightened little girl.

"No, Annie."

He squeezed her hand gently.

"Not ever again."

But neither of them knew that the biggest surprise was still waiting.

Because while detectives were searching through the files recovered from Callaway...

One DNA report buried inside an old sealed envelope revealed a secret that had remained hidden for eleven years.

A secret connecting Annie...

Not to Victoria.

May you like

Not to Martha.

But to Richard Whitmore himself.
