CHAPTER 4 – THE WIFE WHO BUILT HER EMPIRE ON LIES

CHAPTER 4 – THE WIFE WHO BUILT HER EMPIRE ON LIES
Victoria Whitmore arrived at headquarters twenty-three minutes later.
She was elegant as always.
Designer suit.
Diamond earrings.
Perfect makeup.
Perfect smile.
She walked toward the conference room expecting another routine board meeting.
Instead...
She found two private security officers standing outside the locked doors.
"Move."
"Sorry, ma'am."
"I said move."
"Mr. Whitmore gave strict instructions."
Victoria's smile faded.
Before she could argue, the doors unlocked.
Richard stood inside.
"Come in."
She entered gracefully.
The doors locked again behind her.
Victoria looked around the room.
Every executive avoided her eyes.
She immediately understood something had gone wrong.
Richard remained standing.
"I visited Riverside Court."
Her expression never changed.
"Did you?"
"I met one of its former tenants."
"I'm sorry to hear that."
"So am I."
He placed a black trash bag onto the conference table.
Victoria glanced at it with visible annoyance.
"What is this?"
"The entire life of an eleven-year-old girl."
Silence.
Richard slowly removed each item.
A worn Bible.
Three faded family photographs.
A knitted scarf.
A school spelling trophy.
A stuffed rabbit with one missing ear.
Finally...
A pink envelope.
He unfolded it.
"This," Richard said quietly, "is Martha Williams' rent payment."
Victoria frowned.
"So?"
"It was never deposited."
The accounting director suddenly looked horrified.
Richard continued.
"It was received."
Another document.
"It was logged."
Another.
"It was marked unpaid."
He placed bank records beside the envelope.
"The money disappeared."
Now every executive was staring at Victoria.
She laughed softly.
"Surely you aren't suggesting I stole rent money."
"No."
Richard's voice remained calm.
"I'm suggesting someone created fake delinquencies."
Victoria crossed her arms.
"Do you have proof?"
"I do now."
Daniel entered carrying a laptop.
"Recovered security footage."
He connected it to the projector.
The screen lit up.
Riverside Court.
Three weeks earlier.
The lobby camera showed Mr. Callaway accepting Martha's rent envelope.
Minutes later...
Victoria herself entered the office.
She spoke briefly with Callaway.
He handed her the envelope.
She removed the cash.
Then she fed an empty envelope into the payment file.
The room went completely still.
Victoria's face finally lost color.
Richard looked at her.
"Would you like me to play the audio?"
She said nothing.
Daniel pressed another key.
Voices filled the room.
Callaway asked, "What about the old woman?"
Victoria answered coldly,
"Once she's three weeks behind, she's gone."
"And the granddaughter?"
"Children don't own property."
The recording ended.
No one breathed.
Richard stared at the woman he had shared twenty-three years of marriage with.
"How many?"
Victoria looked away.
"How many families?"
Still silence.
Richard's fist slowly tightened.
"Was Annie the first?"
"No."
"The tenth?"
Nothing.
"The hundredth?"
Finally Victoria spoke.
"It wasn't personal."
The room erupted.
Richard slammed both hands onto the conference table.
"IT WAS THEIR HOMES!"
Silence crashed over the room again.
Victoria's voice remained strangely calm.
"The land was worth hundreds of millions."
"So you threw elderly people onto the street?"
"They signed leases."
"They trusted my company."
"They were obstacles."
Richard stepped backward as though she had struck him.
For the first time in decades...
He realized he no longer recognized the woman standing before him.
His phone rang.
Daniel answered first.
His expression instantly changed.
"Sir..."
Richard looked up.
"What?"
Daniel swallowed.
"Security just called from the estate."
Richard felt cold.
"What happened?"
"...Annie is gone."
The room fell silent.
One of the guards had found the guest room window open.
The blanket lay on the floor.
And taped to the pillow...
Was a single handwritten note.
Thank you for being kind to me.
I didn't want anyone getting into trouble because of me.
I'm going to find Grandma a new home.
Richard's heart dropped.
Outside the headquarters, dark storm clouds rolled over Atlanta.
Somewhere in that city...
An eleven-year-old girl believed she had to disappear to save the only adult who had ever helped her.
And Richard suddenly understood one terrifying truth.
May you like
If Victoria's people found Annie before he did...
The only witness capable of exposing everything might never be seen again.
