CHAPTER 5 – THE TUNNEL BENEATH THE EMPIRE

CHAPTER 5 – THE TUNNEL BENEATH THE EMPIRE
The explosion hurled concrete across the warehouse floor.
Emily instinctively threw herself over Sophie.
Dust swallowed the room.
The lights flickered once…
Then darkness.
Only the red glow of emergency exit signs pierced the smoke.
Outside, automatic gunfire erupted.
Jonathan Mercer shouted, "Positions!"
His men overturned steel tables, using them as makeshift barricades.
Bullets ripped through the warehouse windows.
Glass exploded inward.
Richard Harrington grabbed Emily's arm.
"This way."
He pulled aside an old steel shelf.
Hidden beneath it was a thick iron hatch.
Emily stared.
"A tunnel?"
Richard nodded.
"My grandfather built it during Prohibition. It connects to the old subway maintenance system."
Jonathan looked over his shoulder.
"I'll buy you five minutes."
Richard's face hardened.
"You won't survive."
Jonathan smiled.
"I stopped expecting to."
He extended his hand.
Richard clasped it firmly.
"Thank you… for staying."
Jonathan laughed softly.
"You once saved my family."
"It was time I repaid the debt."
Without another word, he slammed the hatch shut behind Richard, Emily, and Sophie.
The metallic clang echoed through the tunnel.
Then came another explosion.
The ceiling shook violently.
Emily flinched.
Richard kept moving.
"We don't stop."
Above them…
Victoria Harrington stepped from her armored SUV.
She wore a black coat despite the summer night.
Rain had begun falling again.
She calmly watched flames spread through the warehouse.
One of her men approached.
"Ma'am… they escaped underground."
Victoria wasn't surprised.
"Seal every exit."
"There are dozens."
"Then find them."
The man hesitated.
"What about Jonathan Mercer?"
Victoria looked toward the burning building.
A faint smile crossed her lips.
"He chose the wrong side."
Seconds later…
The warehouse erupted in a massive fireball.
The shockwave shattered nearby windows.
Victoria never looked away.
"No survivors," one guard reported.
Victoria answered quietly,
"We'll see."
Nearly two miles away…
Michael's command center buzzed with activity.
A satellite map illuminated one wall.
A technician suddenly stood.
"I've got something!"
Michael rushed over.
"What?"
"A thermal anomaly beneath the old subway tunnels."
Daniel leaned closer.
"Can you identify the heat signatures?"
The technician enlarged the image.
"Four people moving."
Michael's heart pounded.
"Emily…"
Another analyst interrupted.
"Wait."
Everyone turned.
"There are at least thirty armed individuals entering the tunnel system from multiple access points."
Silence.
Daniel whispered,
"Victoria's hunting them."
Michael grabbed his jacket.
"I'm going."
"You'll never make it in time."
"I have to."
Daniel tossed him a ring of keys.
"Garage B."
Michael caught them.
"What is this?"
"Your father's contingency plan."
Three levels beneath the building…
Michael stopped in disbelief.
Hidden beneath dust-covered tarps sat six armored vehicles.
Military grade.
Unregistered.
One black SUV still gleamed as though it had been serviced yesterday.
Daniel smiled.
"Your father prepared for this day years ago."
Michael opened the driver's door.
Inside lay a sealed envelope.
Written in Richard Harrington's handwriting.
For Michael. Only when the family is under attack.
Michael tore it open.
Inside was a single handwritten sentence.
Never fight your mother where she expects you to.
Beneath it…
A map.
Not of New York.
Of Harrington Manor.
Every hidden passage.
Every panic room.
Every underground entrance.
Michael stared.
"My father built a fortress…"
Daniel corrected him.
"No."
"He built an escape."
Deep underground…
Emily struggled to keep pace.
The tunnel smelled of rust and damp earth.
Sophie had fallen asleep again despite the chaos.
Richard suddenly stopped.
He knelt beside an old steel junction box.
Hidden inside was a satellite phone.
He dialed one number.
No answer.
Then…
A voice.
"Identify yourself."
"This is Richard."
Silence.
Then the operator replied,
"Welcome back, sir."
Richard exhaled slowly.
"It's time."
Across the country…
Inside a secure government archive outside Washington, D.C., an elderly records officer unlocked a vault that hadn't been opened in twelve years.
He removed one red folder.
Across the front was printed:
HARRINGTON FILE – SEALED BY EXECUTIVE ORDER
The officer picked up the phone.
"The authorization code matches."
A woman's voice answered.
"Release everything."
Back in New York…
Victoria's phone rang.
She answered without greeting.
"What?"
Her chief of security sounded shaken.
"Ma'am… we've got a problem."
"What kind?"
"The federal archive just released the Harrington file."
Victoria's expression changed for the first time that night.
"What?"
"It was protected by presidential authorization."
Her grip tightened around the phone.
"Who signed it?"
May you like
The answer made even Victoria lose her composure.
"...Your husband."
