CHAPTER 6: The Letter Grace Never Sent

CHAPTER 6: The Letter Grace Never Sent

Detective Ortiz reopened every file connected to Grace Collins.

Hospital records.

Insurance documents.

Bank statements.

Phone logs.

Then an overlooked piece of evidence surfaced.

A storage company.

Grace had rented a small locker just eleven days before she died.

No one had claimed its contents.

Arthur, Ethan, and Detective Ortiz drove there immediately.

The manager unlocked the dusty metal door.

Inside...

There wasn't much.

A cardboard box.

An old camera.

Several children's drawings.

A blue wool scarf.

Arthur froze.

His hands trembled.

"The scarf..."

It was the same one.

The scarf worn by the young woman who had bought him bread fifty years earlier.

Grace had kept it all her life.

Carefully folded beneath it was a sealed envelope.

Across the front, written in Grace's unmistakable handwriting:

For Arthur Bennett.
If we never meet again.

Arthur could barely break the seal.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Dear Arthur,

You probably don't remember me.

You were just a frightened little boy carrying your sister through the snow.

But I never forgot you.

Years later I saw your photograph in the newspaper.

You had become exactly the man I prayed you would become.

Every food pantry I opened...

Every child I fed...

I thought about that little boy who promised to help someone else one day.

Arthur wiped away a tear.

The letter continued.

If this reaches you, something has gone terribly wrong.

Someone has been stealing from families who cannot defend themselves.

I collected evidence.

If anything happens to me, protect Ethan and Lily.

They know nothing.

Please don't let them pay for what I discovered.

Arthur's breathing stopped.

Folded inside the final page...

Was a flash drive.

Detective Ortiz immediately placed it into evidence.

Back at the police department, technicians opened the files.

Dozens of videos.

Hidden recordings.

Financial spreadsheets.

Secret meetings.

One video showed Richard Hale sitting across from Greg Lawson.

Their voices were perfectly clear.

Richard slid an envelope across the table.

"Delay her treatment."

Greg frowned.

"She's asking questions."

"Exactly."

"And the children?"

Richard shrugged.

"They'll disappear into the system."

Arthur slammed the table so hard the computer monitor shook.

"They planned this."

Detective Ortiz nodded grimly.

"They didn't just steal money."

"They silenced anyone who discovered it."

Before anyone could say another word—

Arthur's phone rang.

Mrs. Evelyn Harris.

Her voice was shaking.

"Mr. Bennett..."

Arthur stood instantly.

"What happened?"

"It's Lily."

His heart dropped.

"Is she all right?"

"She was..."

Mrs. Harris began crying.

"...she was playing in the garden."

"And now she's gone."

Arthur's blood turned to ice.

"What do you mean gone?"

"The security cameras..."

Her voice broke completely.

"They went black."

Detective Ortiz was already grabbing his coat.

Arthur didn't wait.

He sprinted from the station.

As his car raced toward Bennett Manor, only one thought echoed in his mind:

They hadn't been investigating the past.

The past...

May you like

Had just come back for the children.

To be continued…
