CHAPTER 4: The Mansion Full of Ghosts

CHAPTER 4: The Mansion Full of Ghosts

Bennett Manor stood on a hill overlooking the city, its warm lights glowing against the winter darkness like a beacon.

Ethan had never seen a house so large.

Iron gates.

Stone fountains frozen beneath ice.

Towering oak doors.

He instinctively tightened his grip on Lily.

Children like them didn't belong in places like this.

Arthur noticed.

"You don't have to earn the right to be warm," he said quietly.

"You already deserve it."

For the first time in days, Ethan's eyes filled with tears.

Inside, the staff lined the entrance.

Not out of obligation.

Because they had worked for Arthur long enough to recognize the look on his face.

He had brought home family.

Mrs. Evelyn Harris, the elderly housekeeper, knelt in front of Lily.

"Oh, sweetheart..."

She wrapped a thick quilt around the little girl before gently carrying her upstairs.

"The bath is ready."

"So is dinner."

Lily whispered sleepily,

"Can my brother come too?"

Mrs. Harris smiled.

"Always."

Meanwhile, Arthur's physician arrived for an emergency examination.

Dr. Daniel Reeves checked Lily carefully.

His smile faded.

"She's severely malnourished."

He examined Ethan next.

"He's hiding it better."

"But he's exhausted."

Arthur asked quietly,

"Will they recover?"

"They will."

"If they never go hungry again."

Arthur nodded once.

"They won't."

Later that evening, Ethan wandered through the mansion while Lily slept.

Every wall held photographs.

Business awards.

Charity galas.

World leaders.

Then one picture stopped him.

A faded black-and-white photograph.

Two children.

A boy around eleven.

A little girl wrapped in a blanket.

Standing outside an old bakery.

Snow everywhere.

Ethan stared.

It looked exactly like them.

Arthur approached silently.

"My sister Emma."

Ethan looked up.

"She died?"

Arthur nodded.

"Years later."

"But not from hunger."

"I kept my promise long enough to save her."

His voice grew softer.

"I couldn't save everyone else."

A butler entered hurriedly.

"Mr. Bennett."

Arthur turned.

"What is it?"

"The detective is here."

Detective Ortiz stepped inside carrying a sealed evidence bag.

"We searched Greg Lawson's house."

Arthur's expression hardened.

"What did you find?"

"A safe."

Inside were bank statements.

Property deeds.

Insurance documents.

And something else.

The detective slowly removed a thick medical file.

"Grace Collins."

Arthur frowned.

"Why would Greg have her medical records?"

Ortiz looked grim.

"Because someone paid him to keep them hidden."

Arthur opened the file.

The first page made his blood run cold.

Cause of delayed treatment: Insurance coverage canceled without patient notification.

Below it...

A handwritten note.

Authorization approved by: Bennett Health Foundation.

Arthur stopped breathing.

His own foundation.

His own name.

His own organization.

Connected to the woman who had once saved his life.

He looked at Detective Ortiz.

"This has to be a mistake."

Ortiz answered quietly,

"I hope it is."

"But if it isn't..."

He glanced toward the staircase where Ethan and Lily slept peacefully.

"...then the people responsible may be much closer to you than either of us imagined."

Arthur slowly closed the file.

For the first time in decades...

May you like

He wondered whether the greatest threat to those children had never been Greg Lawson.

But someone inside the empire he had spent a lifetime building.
