CHAPTER 7 — The Final Recording

CHAPTER 7 — The Final Recording
The white lights on the horizon multiplied.
One became three.
Three became six.
Within minutes, blue emergency strobes reflected across the black Atlantic, painting the yacht in flashes of sapphire and white.
No one spoke.
Even Preston had fallen silent.
Inside the bridge, he stared through the windshield as the federal vessels closed the distance with impossible speed.
A loudspeaker echoed across the water.
"Luxury yacht Avalon, this is the United States Coast Guard operating jointly with federal authorities. Reduce speed immediately. Prepare to be boarded."
The captain, still rubbing his bruised shoulder, looked at me.
"He locked us out."
The bridge door was secured from the inside.
The engines continued at full throttle.
Another announcement came.
"Mr. Preston Hale, we know you are aboard. This vessel is surrounded. Shut down the engines immediately."
Judge Collins slowly turned toward me.
"They called him by name."
I nodded.
"They've known he was here all along."
Inside the bridge, Preston picked up the satellite phone.
His hands were finally shaking.
"Rebecca."
I answered.
"What?"
"You planned this."
"No."
"You planned it yourself."
Silence.
Then he laughed bitterly.
"When did you stop loving me?"
I closed my eyes.
"I stopped believing you."
Another long silence.
"I did love you once."
"I know."
"It just wasn't worth eighteen million dollars."
His breathing became uneven.
"I never intended..."
I interrupted him.
"Don't."
"You've lied enough."
He whispered,
"What happens now?"
"The truth."
Behind us, a helicopter appeared.
Its searchlight swept across the deck.
Guests shielded their eyes.
Wind whipped through the dinner table, scattering linen napkins into the sea.
The loudspeaker returned.
"Mr. Hale, this is your final warning."
Instead of surrendering—
Preston pushed the throttles even farther.
The yacht surged.
Warning alarms screamed from the engine room.
The first mate looked horrified.
"He's going to destroy the turbines!"
Then—
A deafening explosion erupted beneath the stern.
The entire yacht shook violently.
Every light flickered.
One engine died instantly.
The second coughed twice before shutting down.
Silence.
Only waves remained.
The yacht drifted helplessly beneath the helicopter's spotlight.
Preston had pushed the engines beyond their limits.
There was nowhere left to run.
Federal boarding teams arrived within minutes.
Armed agents swept across the deck with practiced precision.
"Federal agents! Everyone remain where you are!"
Guests raised their hands instinctively.
Two agents forced open the bridge door.
Seconds later, Preston emerged.
His white linen shirt was stained with grease and sweat.
His perfect hair had fallen across his forehead.
For the first time since I had met him...
He looked ordinary.
Just another frightened man in handcuffs.
As agents escorted him toward the stern, he looked back only once.
At me.
"I would've given you everything."
I met his eyes.
"You were asking me to die for it."
May you like
He lowered his head.
He never spoke again.
