CHAPTER 4 — The Signal No One Saw

CHAPTER 4 — The Signal No One Saw
The atmosphere shifted.
Not dramatically.
Subtly.
Like the moment before a thunderstorm finally breaks.
Everyone still smiled.
But nobody relaxed.
Preston slowly placed the flash drive into his pocket.
"I think it's best we discuss this privately."
I nodded.
"I agree."
His shoulders loosened.
Then I added—
"Tomorrow."
"After the FBI arrives."
The words landed like an explosion.
Grant's wineglass slipped from his fingers.
It shattered across the deck.
"What?"
Preston asked.
His voice was almost calm.
Almost.
"I said the FBI."
Howard laughed nervously.
"Surely this is some misunderstanding."
"No."
I turned toward him.
"It isn't."
Then I looked directly at Grant.
"Did Preston tell you federal investigators have been reviewing Hale Capital for nearly five months?"
Grant's mouth opened.
Slowly.
He looked at Preston.
"You said the audit was routine."
"It was."
"No," I said.
"It wasn't."
Grant took a step backward.
"What did you involve me in?"
Preston ignored him.
His attention stayed fixed on me.
"Who have you spoken to?"
"I've had plenty of time."
His jaw clenched.
"You've been spying on me."
"I've been surviving you."
The words cut deeper than shouting ever could.
Mallory finally broke.
"I can't do this anymore!"
She stood so suddenly her chair tipped over.
"I told you this would happen!"
Everyone stared.
She began crying uncontrollably.
"I never wanted anyone to die."
The sentence echoed across the deck.
No one moved.
Dr. Fisk blinked.
"What did she say?"
Mallory covered her mouth.
Too late.
Preston turned toward her with pure fury.
"You idiot."
Judge Collins stood.
"Preston..."
"...what exactly is she talking about?"
For several endless seconds, nobody breathed.
Then—
The yacht's satellite phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
The captain answered from the bridge.
His voice carried through the open doorway.
"Yes?"
A pause.
Then—
His expression changed.
He looked toward the upper deck.
Toward us.
"Mr. Hale..."
"There's a call for your wife."
Preston frowned.
"Who is it?"
The captain hesitated.
Then answered loudly enough for everyone to hear.
"A Special Agent Daniel Mercer."
"He says it's urgent."
Every face turned toward me.
Including Preston's.
I smiled calmly.
"I've been expecting that call."
Preston's complexion turned ghost-white.
Because in that instant, he realized something he had never even considered.
He had spent six months building a false story about his wife.
While his wife had spent the same six months quietly building a federal case against him.
And somewhere far beyond the dark Atlantic horizon...
A Coast Guard cutter had just changed course.
May you like
Its destination—
Our yacht.
