CHAPTER 7 — SARAH'S FINAL GIFT

CHAPTER 7 — SARAH'S FINAL GIFT

Thanksgiving night passed quietly.

For the first time in twenty-six years, Daniel Brooks did not spend the holiday alone.

Emily sat beside his hospital bed, reading aloud from one of the letters he had written but never been allowed to send.

He listened with tears in his eyes.

"You still have them all," she whispered.

"I never threw away hope."

Just after sunrise, a lawyer arrived carrying a weathered leather briefcase.

"My name is Benjamin Lawson."

He looked directly at Daniel.

"I've been waiting a very long time for this meeting."

Daniel smiled faintly.

"So... Sarah's instructions finally take effect."

Emily looked between them.

"My mother's instructions?"

Benjamin nodded.

"The day before the fire, Sarah left legal documents with my father, who was her attorney. She believed someone was trying to silence her."

He opened the briefcase and carefully removed a sealed envelope.

Across the front, in elegant handwriting, were the words:

To Our Daughter, Emma, When She Finally Knows the Truth.

Emily's hands trembled as she broke the seal.

Inside was a letter.

The paper had yellowed with age.

But the ink remained perfectly clear.

My sweet Emma,

If you're reading this, then I wasn't there to watch you grow up.

Please don't spend your life asking why I left.

I didn't.

Someone took that choice from me.

If your father found you, then believe everything he tells you.

He is the bravest man I have ever known.

And if he couldn't reach you sooner...

It wasn't because he stopped loving you.

It was because he was protecting you.

Promise me one thing.

Don't let what happened to us make your heart hard.

Build something that protects children who have no one.

Let our pain become someone else's safety.

Love,

Mom

Emily pressed the letter against her chest and cried silently.

Benjamin then removed another document.

Sarah's will.

"There is something else."

Emily assumed there could not possibly be another surprise.

She was wrong.

Sarah had owned twenty-eight percent of a small manufacturing company before her death.

After decades of growth, mergers, and investments, those shares were now worth nearly forty-eight million dollars.

Emily stared in disbelief.

"I... inherited this?"

Benjamin nodded.

"Sarah placed everything in a protected trust."

"But why wasn't it given to me?"

"Because the trust required proof that you learned the truth about your identity."

Daniel smiled.

"She knew they would lie."

The following week, Emily held her first press conference.

Reporters expected her to speak about the arrests.

Instead, she stood beside Daniel and announced something entirely different.

"I spent twenty-six years believing I had been abandoned."

She paused.

"I wasn't."

"My father never stopped fighting for me."

She looked toward him.

"And there are thousands of children who still need someone to fight for them."

Emily announced the creation of The Sarah Brooks Foundation, dedicated to providing legal assistance, emergency housing, and educational support for abused and abandoned children.

Every dollar of her inheritance would be used to build it.

The room fell silent.

Even seasoned reporters lowered their cameras.

One journalist finally asked,

"After everything you've been through... why give the money away?"

Emily smiled through tears.

"Because my mother already decided what it was for."

Meanwhile, Robert and Linda Carter awaited trial.

The evidence continued to grow.

Former officials admitted accepting bribes.

Retired investigators confessed that reports had been altered.

A family court employee revealed that adoption documents had been falsified under political pressure.

One by one, the truth emerged.

The case became national news.

May you like

It was no longer just about one stolen child.

It exposed an entire network of corruption.
