CHAPTER 6 — THE THANKSGIVING ARREST

CHAPTER 6 — THE THANKSGIVING ARREST

News spread through Buffalo before sunrise.

State investigators arrived at Robert and Linda Carter's home with three police vehicles.

Neighbors peeked through curtains.

Reporters gathered across the street.

Robert opened the front door wearing a robe.

"What is this?"

Detective Morrison stepped forward.

"Robert Carter..."

She unfolded the warrant.

"...you are under arrest for insurance fraud, conspiracy, obstruction of justice, falsifying adoption documents, and the murder of Sarah Brooks."

Linda screamed.

"This is ridiculous!"

Two officers handcuffed Robert.

He tried to pull away.

"You have no proof!"

Detective Morrison calmly held up a flash drive.

"We do now."

The breakthrough had come from an unexpected source.

Daniel's old mechanic shop.

While preparing the building for sale after learning of Daniel's illness, a young employee had discovered a rusted metal toolbox hidden beneath the workshop floor.

Inside was a VHS tape.

Daniel had recorded it twenty-six years earlier, believing he might not survive the fire.

The tape showed Robert Carter arguing with Sarah outside the house only hours before the fire.

Robert shouted,

"If you report me, you'll lose everything!"

Sarah answered,

"I'd rather lose everything than help you steal from innocent people."

The camera cut out.

Hours later, the house burned.

For decades the tape had been forgotten, hidden where Daniel left it while recovering from his burns.

Now it had resurfaced.

Combined with financial records, witness statements, and newly recovered evidence, it shattered Robert's carefully built lies.

Emily watched the arrests on live television from Daniel's hospital room.

Neither of them spoke.

Finally Daniel whispered,

"I waited twenty-six Thanksgivings."

Emily squeezed his scarred hand.

"It was worth the wait."

The television showed Linda crying as officers escorted her into a patrol car.

A reporter asked loudly,

"Do you have anything to say to your adopted daughter?"

Linda looked directly into the camera.

For a second, Emily hoped for an apology.

Instead Linda shouted,

"She ruined our lives!"

Emily quietly turned off the television.

"I finally understand."

Daniel looked at her.

"What?"

"They never loved me."

Daniel shook his head gently.

"No."

He smiled through exhausted eyes.

"They just couldn't stop someone else from loving you."

Emily leaned over and hugged him.

For the first time since the crash, the emptiness inside her chest began to disappear.

Outside the hospital window, snowflakes drifted silently across the parking lot.

Inside, a father and daughter shared the Thanksgiving they had both been waiting for—twenty-six years too late, but finally together.

Neither of them knew that before the week was over, another secret hidden by Sarah Brooks herself would emerge—one that would change not only Emily's future, but the lives of hundreds of children she had never met.
