CHAPTER 7 – The Locker at the Old Station

CHAPTER 7 – The Locker at the Old Station

Rain began falling just after sunset.

Not the gentle kind that cooled the summer air, but a hard mountain rain that blurred headlights and emptied the streets of Asheville.

Daniel drove without using the company's GPS.

"If Ethan has access to Holloway systems," he said, "he can probably track every corporate vehicle."

They switched cars twice before finally stopping beside the abandoned freight terminal on the edge of town.

The old station had been closed for years.

Most of its lockers remained untouched, relics from another era.

Locker C-417 stood in the far corner.

Its faded paint was chipped.

Dust covered the handle.

No one had opened it in a very long time.

Adrian held the silver key.

His hand hesitated.

"So much began with Claire."

He looked at Marlowe.

"Perhaps it should end with you."

Marlowe inserted the key.

The lock resisted at first.

Then—

Click.

The metal door slowly swung open.

Inside sat a weatherproof storage case.

Daniel immediately scanned it for tampering.

"It's intact."

Marlowe carefully lifted the lid.

Inside were three objects.

A portable hard drive.

A leather notebook.

And a sealed envelope marked:

Release Only If I Am Dead.

The notebook belonged to Claire.

Every page was dated.

Every suspicious transaction carefully documented.

She had written names, account numbers, meeting times, and observations.

But one entry made Adrian stop breathing.

March 14

I overheard Ethan say Margaret must never return.

He believes Adrian will sign the restructuring documents if he thinks she's gone forever.

If anything happens to me, it was never an accident.

Daniel immediately photographed every page.

"This alone changes everything."

But Claire had prepared something even stronger.

The hard drive contained security footage copied from the foundation's accounting servers.

Video after video showed Ethan secretly authorizing illegal transfers using forged digital signatures.

One recording captured him threatening Claire in the underground parking garage.

His voice was unmistakable.

"You have two choices, Claire."

"Forget what you found..."

"...or your daughter grows up without a mother."

Marlowe covered her mouth.

She had never heard her mother's voice.

Now she was hearing the man who had stolen her from her.

Tears rolled silently down her face.

Daniel's phone rang.

It was an encrypted line.

He answered immediately.

A familiar voice spoke.

"We don't have much time."

"Samuel?"

"I'm alive."

Relief flooded the room.

"They took my phone but not my recorder."

"Where are you?"

"I escaped."

Samuel coughed.

"The recording captured everything."

"Everything?"

"Ethan admitted he forged Adrian's authority."

"He admitted paying investigators to keep Margaret hidden."

"And..."

Samuel paused.

"He admitted ordering Claire's accident."

The room became perfectly still.

Not an accident.

Murder.

For twenty-three years, Marlowe had believed fate had taken her mother.

Now she knew a man had made that decision.

Daniel looked toward Adrian.

"We go to the authorities."

Adrian shook his head.

"Not yet."

Daniel frowned.

"Why?"

"Because Ethan still controls the company."

"He'll destroy evidence."

"He already thinks he's won."

Adrian looked at the hard drive.

"We'll let him believe that... for one more day."

The next morning, Ethan stood confidently before shareholders at Holloway Biotech headquarters.

Television cameras lined the auditorium.

Financial reporters filled the front rows.

"My brother's health requires privacy," Ethan announced smoothly.

"As acting CEO, I intend to continue our mission without interruption."

The audience applauded.

Then the giant presentation screen behind him flickered.

Ethan frowned.

"I don't believe this presentation—"

The first video began playing.

His own face appeared.

His own voice echoed through the room.

"You have two choices, Claire..."

The applause stopped instantly.

The second video followed.

Then the third.

Bank transfers.

Forgery.

Threats.

Confessions.

Every camera in the room turned away from the stage...

...and toward Ethan.

His confident smile vanished.

Security officers entered from both sides of the auditorium.

One stepped onto the stage.

"Ethan Holloway."

May you like

The room fell silent.

"You're under arrest."
