CHAPTER 6 – The Recording That Changed Everything

CHAPTER 6 – The Recording That Changed Everything

The elderly director's name was Samuel Rhodes.

For thirty-two years, he had served on the Holloway board.

He had watched Adrian build the company from a struggling biotech startup into one of the nation's largest medical innovators.

He also knew something few others did.

Claire Pierce had once saved the company.

Years ago, she had quietly exposed accounting irregularities before they became a public scandal.

She had been brilliant.

Honest.

Fearless.

Then, without explanation...

She had died.

Samuel had never believed it was an accident.

As Ethan spoke confidently about emergency leadership, Samuel's fingers rested calmly on his fountain pen.

Hidden inside was a miniature digital recorder.

He had begun recording the meeting the moment Ethan entered.

Not because he expected a confession.

Because experience had taught him that guilty people often revealed themselves when they believed they had already won.

Back in Asheville, Adrian paced the viewing room.

"He forged a medical leave?"

Daniel nodded.

"That's only the beginning."

He opened another file.

"In the last hour, Ethan has frozen access to your executive accounts."

"He can't."

"He already has."

"My voting shares?"

"We're verifying."

Adrian stopped pacing.

For the first time in years...

He realized his brother had probably been preparing for this moment long before Margaret reappeared.

Marlowe sat quietly, reading Claire's documents.

Something caught her attention.

One page looked different.

Unlike the financial records, it wasn't company paperwork.

It was handwritten.

A list.

Dates.

Addresses.

Names.

Beside several names appeared a single word.

Paid.

Beside others...

Missing.

At the very bottom stood one final name.

Claire Pierce.

Beside it, written in red ink:

Handle immediately.

A chill swept through the room.

Marlowe slowly lifted the page.

"This wasn't about money."

Adrian looked over her shoulder.

"It was a list."

Daniel's expression darkened.

"A cleanup list."

Margaret reached for the small velvet jewelry box.

"I almost forgot."

She opened it carefully.

Inside rested a simple silver key.

Nothing else.

Marlowe frowned.

"A key?"

Margaret nodded.

"Claire said if the letter wasn't enough..."

She handed the key to Adrian.

"...this would prove everything."

A tiny brass tag hung from the ring.

Stamped into the metal were four numbers.

C-417.

Daniel immediately recognized the format.

"Railway Station Storage."

Everyone looked at him.

"Old train stations used coin-operated lockers before digital storage became common."

He turned the key over.

"C-417 is a locker number."

Margaret's eyes widened.

"I never knew."

Claire had never told her.

She had simply said:

"If I don't survive... someone trustworthy will understand what this opens."

Daniel's phone vibrated again.

He answered.

His face hardened.

"Repeat that."

Silence.

Then...

"When?"

Another pause.

He slowly lowered the phone.

"What happened?"

Daniel looked directly at Adrian.

"Samuel Rhodes has disappeared."

"What?"

"He walked out of the board meeting twenty minutes ago."

"And?"

"His driver found the company car abandoned."

Marlowe felt her pulse quicken.

"Was he kidnapped?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at the recorder icon still blinking on Samuel's fountain pen—visible in the last security image sent to his phone.

"If Samuel managed to keep recording..."

He met Adrian's eyes.

"...someone will do anything to make sure that recording is never heard."

The room fell silent.

Because they all understood the same terrifying truth.

The evidence hidden for eighteen years had finally surfaced.

And now...

people were starting to disappear again.
