CHAPTER 5 — The Girl They Could Never Find

CHAPTER 5 — The Girl They Could Never Find

The maintenance worker disappeared before I reached the hallway.

I slammed through the ICU doors, nearly colliding with two nurses pushing a crash cart.

"Lock this floor!" I shouted.

Detective Collins was already barking orders into her radio.

"Every elevator. Every stairwell. Nobody leaves this hospital."

But I knew better.

The Raven Circle never relied on a single escape route.

By the time officers searched the maintenance corridors, they found only a discarded uniform, a fake hospital ID, and a disposable phone still warm from its last call.

The call had lasted exactly twelve seconds.

The only words recovered from the recording were:

"Subject remembers. Proceed to Phase Two."

Emma survived the night.

Barely.

The antidote slowed the poison, but the neurologist warned us that portions of her memory were returning in fragments.

Some memories were so traumatic that her body reacted violently each time she tried to speak.

Late that afternoon, she motioned for me to come closer.

I held her trembling hand.

"You don't have to force it."

She shook her head.

"I have to."

She closed her eyes.

"I wasn't adopted because someone wanted a baby."

Her voice cracked.

"I was taken."

My stomach tightened.

"What do you mean?"

"They called us... Christmas Children."

Her breathing became shallow.

"There were twelve of us."

"Twelve children?"

She nodded.

"They tested experimental neurological drugs on us. They wanted children who could survive toxins... soldiers who could never be poisoned."

I stared at her.

It sounded impossible.

Then I remembered the military file.

VX-17.

Fort Halstead.

Project Christmas Child.

"They erased our names," Emma whispered.

"They gave us numbers."

"What was yours?"

She swallowed painfully.

"Subject Twelve."

The same words written on Brian's photograph.

Detective Collins obtained a federal warrant within hours.

By sunrise, agents from multiple federal agencies arrived at the hospital.

One man introduced himself only as Director Samuel Hayes.

No badge.

No agency name.

Just credentials that made every police officer immediately step aside.

He asked to speak with me alone.

Inside a private conference room, he placed a thick classified folder on the table.

"I've spent twenty years trying to find Project Christmas Child."

"You knew about it?"

"I knew pieces."

He slid several photographs toward me.

Every child in the pictures had disappeared between the ages of three and six.

Eleven photographs had red X's across them.

One remained untouched.

Emma.

"They eliminated every survivor."

I looked up.

"Except my wife."

Hayes nodded.

"Until now."

Another photo stopped me cold.

It showed Dr. Evelyn Mercer standing beside a little blonde girl.

The child looked almost identical to Lily.

Same smile.

Same eyes.

Same birthmark beneath the left ear.

"Who is she?"

Hayes answered quietly.

"Mercer's biological daughter."

I looked again.

"She looks exactly like Lily."

"Because Lily inherited those features."

The room fell silent.

"What are you saying?"

Hayes took a long breath.

"Mercer wasn't only running the program."

He looked directly into my eyes.

"She was Emma's biological mother."

Everything I thought I knew unraveled.

Emma had spent her entire life believing Judith was her mother.

Instead, Judith had stolen her.

Raised her.

Watched her.

Waited.

Not as a parent...

But as a jailer.

That evening Noah finally woke.

His lips were dry.

His voice barely audible.

"Dad?"

I gripped his hand.

"I'm here."

He frowned.

"The lady..."

"What lady?"

"The grandma lady."

Judith.

"She told me..."

His breathing quickened.

"...that Mommy belonged to her."

Before he could say another word, every light in the hospital went out.

Darkness swallowed the floor.

Emergency generators failed to activate.

Someone had cut the backup system.

Gunfire echoed somewhere below.

Short.

Controlled bursts.

Not random.

Professionals.

Director Hayes drew a concealed pistol.

"They're here."

May you like

The Raven Circle had stopped hiding.

They had come to finish the mission.
