CHAPTER 4 — The Secret Emma Never Knew

CHAPTER 4 — The Secret Emma Never Knew
The photograph was over thirty years old.
Emma looked no older than four.
Standing beside her...
Someone had deliberately torn away another little girl's face.
Detective Collins placed the evidence under a magnifying light.
"There are markings beneath the tear."
Forensic technicians carefully reconstructed the missing edge.
Slowly...
Letters appeared.
JUD...
Judith.
Not as Emma's mother.
As the second child in the photograph.
I frowned.
"That doesn't make sense."
Collins looked up.
"It does if Judith wasn't the adult."
Silence settled over the room.
Then she whispered the impossible.
"What if Judith had a twin sister?"
Twenty-four hours later, DNA results returned.
They changed everything.
Judith wasn't Emma's biological mother.
She wasn't even biologically related.
Emma had been adopted.
Illegally.
Thirty-eight years ago.
The adoption records had been erased.
Every government file sealed.
Every witness either dead...
...or missing.
Someone had spent decades hiding Emma's true identity.
I drove straight to our house.
Police tape still surrounded the front door.
Inside, Christmas dinner remained exactly where we'd left it.
Broken plates.
Bloodstains.
Overturned chairs.
The smell of cinnamon still lingered beneath disinfectant.
For a moment, I could almost hear Emma laughing again.
Then I noticed something different.
One ornament was missing.
The handmade angel Lily had painted last week.
I searched the tree.
Nothing.
Someone had entered the house after police secured it.
I checked the security system.
The cameras had been remotely disabled for exactly six minutes.
Professional again.
But this time...
The hacker made one mistake.
They copied every family photograph stored on our home server.
Except one.
A vacation picture from Yellowstone.
Why skip only that one?
I enlarged it.
Emma stood between me and the children.
Behind us...
A tourist accidentally appeared in the background.
An older woman.
Dark sunglasses.
Wide-brimmed hat.
Watching Emma.
Watching only Emma.
Facial-recognition software matched her within seconds.
Not Judith.
Not a stranger.
A woman officially declared dead twenty-nine years earlier.
Dr. Evelyn Mercer.
Former chief scientist of Project Christmas Child.
Declared killed in a laboratory explosion.
Except...
She clearly wasn't dead.
That night, someone entered Emma's ICU room again.
This time...
It wasn't an assassin.
Emma opened her eyes.
Barely.
Weakly.
She whispered one word before slipping unconscious again.
"Mercer..."
The nurse leaned closer.
"What did you say?"
Emma's heartbeat accelerated violently.
Her eyes opened once more.
She stared directly at me.
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
Then she whispered words that shattered everything I believed about our marriage.
"David... I remember now... I wasn't supposed to survive... and if they know I've remembered... they'll come for Lily next."
The cardiac monitor erupted into alarms.
Outside the ICU window, a maintenance worker slowly removed his cap.
Beneath it...
The black raven tattoo covered his entire neck.
He smiled at me through the glass...
...and raised one finger.
As if counting.
May you like
One child left.
