CHAPTER 3 – Aaron's Final Gift

CHAPTER 3 – Aaron's Final Gift

Laura almost canceled the appointment.

When Daniel Whitman had called the previous afternoon asking her to come to his office, she had assumed it was another routine matter involving Aaron's estate. Fourteen months had passed since the funeral. Every account had been settled. Every insurance form had been signed.

She couldn't imagine what remained.

Noah sat beside her in the waiting room, reading a book with his legs swinging beneath the chair.

Daniel stepped into the lobby and smiled warmly.

"Mrs. Bennett."

Laura stood.

"You can call me Laura."

He nodded.

"And Noah, it's good to see you again."

Noah offered a shy smile.

Daniel led them into the conference room, where a single wooden box rested on the polished table.

Laura frowned.

"I've never seen that before."

"You haven't," Daniel replied. "Aaron instructed me not to release it until I was certain of one thing."

"What thing?"

"That the people he feared most had revealed themselves."

Laura's expression tightened.

"You mean my in-laws."

Daniel didn't answer directly.

"He believed actions would speak louder than accusations."

He slid the box toward her.

"The certified letters confirmed everything."

Laura slowly lifted the lid.

Inside lay Aaron's wedding ring.

A leather-bound journal.

A sealed envelope with her name written in Aaron's unmistakable handwriting.

And a small flash drive.

The sight of his handwriting stole the air from her lungs.

Her fingers trembled as she picked up the envelope.

"I don't know if I can."

Daniel spoke gently.

"You don't have to read it aloud."

She broke the seal anyway.

The first line blurred through her tears.

My beautiful Laura,

If you're reading this, then the people I spent my life trying to protect have finally shown you who they truly are. I'm sorry I wasn't there to stop it.

Laura covered her mouth.

Noah looked up.

"Mom?"

She smiled through her tears.

"I'm okay, sweetheart."

Then she continued reading.

You probably think I hid these things because I didn't trust you. The truth is exactly the opposite. I trusted you more than anyone. I simply knew you would forgive them if you knew the whole story. I couldn't allow that—not if it put you and Noah in danger.

Danger.

The word made Laura stop.

She looked at Daniel.

"Danger?"

He quietly pointed to the flash drive.

Aaron's letter continued.

The missing money everyone will soon learn about wasn't the worst thing Brooke did. It was only what allowed me to discover everything else.

Laura's heartbeat quickened.

"What else?"

Daniel inserted the flash drive into a laptop.

A folder appeared.

PRIVATE RECORDINGS

BANK RECORDS

PERSONAL STATEMENT

There were dozens of files.

Aaron had documented everything.

The first video filled the screen.

It showed Aaron sitting in what looked like a hospital room.

He looked thinner than Laura remembered.

The chemotherapy had already begun.

He smiled sadly into the camera.

"If you're watching this, sweetheart, then I lost."

Laura immediately burst into tears.

"I love you," Aaron said softly. "And I love our little boy more than my own life."

Noah looked toward the screen.

"Daddy..."

Laura pulled him into her arms.

Aaron continued.

"I know Brooke will eventually try to isolate you from the family. She started years ago."

The room became completely silent.

"I caught Brooke stealing from the family foundation. But while investigating the accounts, I found something much worse."

Aaron reached for a folder.

"There were forged signatures."

Daniel froze.

Laura stared.

Aaron continued.

"Not mine."

"Our father's."

Daniel paused the video.

Laura looked confused.

"Forged signatures?"

He opened another file.

Copies of financial documents appeared.

Every one carried Aaron's father's signature.

But beneath them sat an expert forensic report.

Signature determined to be fraudulent.

Laura whispered,

"Oh my God."

Daniel nodded.

"Your father-in-law never approved those transfers."

"So Brooke..."

Daniel finished quietly.

"...used his name to steal from the family business."

Laura leaned back in shock.

"But why keep this secret?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Because Aaron believed exposing her while his father was recovering from heart surgery might kill him."

Laura remembered.

His father had nearly died two years before Aaron's cancer diagnosis.

Aaron had stayed silent...

to save his father's life.

Daniel clicked another file.

A scanned document appeared.

Across the top it read:

CONFIDENTIAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT

Signed by Brooke.

Signed by Aaron.

Laura frowned.

"She admitted everything."

"Yes."

"So why wasn't she arrested?"

"Because Aaron gave her one final chance."

Daniel pointed toward a paragraph.

"If Brooke ever threatens, intimidates, manipulates, or attempts to remove Laura Bennett or Noah Bennett from participation in the Romano family, this agreement becomes immediately void and all evidence shall be delivered to law enforcement."

Laura's eyes widened.

"The Thanksgiving vote..."

Daniel nodded.

"It activated everything."

Laura slowly realized what Aaron had done.

He hadn't merely left behind evidence.

He had designed a trap.

One Brooke could avoid...

simply by treating Laura and Noah with kindness.

Instead...

Brooke had destroyed herself.

That afternoon, across town, Brooke received another phone call.

It was from her husband.

His voice was colder than she had ever heard.

"Did you forge Dad's signature?"

She remained silent.

"Answer me."

"It wasn't supposed to happen like this."

He hung up.

Five minutes later, divorce papers were being drafted.

Brooke's carefully constructed world had begun collapsing.

She still believed she could survive it.

She had no idea Aaron's greatest secret had not yet been revealed.
