CHAPTER 2 – The Letter That Changed Everything

CHAPTER 2 – The Letter That Changed Everything

The envelopes arrived on a gray Tuesday morning.

No phone calls.

No warning.

Just thick ivory envelopes stamped with the unmistakable seal of Whitman & Cole Law Firm.

Brooke opened hers first.

She expected another notice about Aaron's estate.

Instead, the first page made the color drain from her face.

To the Romano family,

If you are reading this, my attorney has determined that Laura and Noah have once again been treated unfairly by members of my family. If that has happened, then everything I feared before my death has become true.

Her hands began to tremble.

"How...?" she whispered.

Across town, her parents were reading the exact same words.

Aaron had anticipated this.

Every single detail.

Laura knew nothing about the letters.

She was sitting at her kitchen table helping Noah finish his math homework when her phone exploded with notifications.

Brooke.

Missed call.

Brooke again.

Five more missed calls.

Then her mother-in-law.

Then Uncle Ray.

Then three cousins who hadn't spoken to her in nearly a year.

Laura ignored every one of them.

The same people who had watched her son cry without saying a word suddenly remembered her phone number.

She wasn't interested.

At Whitman & Cole, attorney Daniel Whitman watched his assistant confirm that every certified letter had been delivered.

"All recipients have signed."

He nodded.

"Good."

"Do you think they'll come?"

Daniel smiled knowingly.

"They always do."

By three o'clock that afternoon, the conference room outside his office was overflowing.

Brooke paced furiously.

"This has to be illegal!"

Her father slammed the folder onto the table.

"Aaron never mentioned any of this."

Their attorney calmly adjusted his glasses.

"He wasn't required to."

"What does he mean he wasn't required?"

Daniel entered the room carrying another sealed folder.

"It means your son anticipated today's events over a year before he died."

Silence.

"You all received only the introduction."

Brooke frowned.

"What?"

"The rest," Daniel replied, placing the folder on the conference table, "is to be read together."

He opened the document.

Aaron's familiar signature appeared at the bottom of every page.

Then Daniel began reading aloud.

To my family,

If you're hearing these words together, then you've likely done exactly what I begged you not to do.

You've blamed Laura instead of grieving with her.

You've treated Noah like he somehow became less of a grandson after I died.

And someone—most likely Brooke—has convinced everyone that protecting family means pushing my wife away.

Brooke shot to her feet.

"This is ridiculous!"

Daniel continued without looking up.

Brooke, if you're interrupting right now... congratulations. You proved me right again.

Every face slowly turned toward her.

Her mouth opened.

No words came out.

Daniel flipped another page.

The biggest lie in this family isn't about money.

It's about what happened six months before my diagnosis.

The room froze.

Even Aaron's father stopped breathing for a second.

Brooke stared at the page.

"No..."

Daniel looked directly at her.

"I believe you already know what's coming."

Her voice cracked.

"Don't read another word."

"I've been instructed to read every word."

"You can't!"

"I can."

"And I will."

He continued.

Laura never knew why I refused to let Brooke help manage my business anymore.

I told everyone it was because she wanted more time with her children.

That wasn't true.

Brooke grabbed the edge of the table so hard her knuckles turned white.

Her husband slowly stepped away from her.

"What is he talking about?" he asked.

She didn't answer.

Daniel turned another page.

I discovered financial transfers that couldn't be explained. Hundreds of thousands of dollars moved through accounts connected to the family foundation.

When I confronted Brooke, she begged me not to tell our parents. She promised she would repay everything before anyone noticed.

The room erupted.

"What?"

"No..."

"That's impossible!"

Aaron's father looked at his daughter in disbelief.

"Brooke..."

She burst into tears.

"It wasn't like that!"

Daniel wasn't finished.

I gave her one chance. One.

She signed a written confession acknowledging the money and agreeing never to interfere with Laura or Noah if anything happened to me.

Brooke lunged toward the document.

"Stop reading!"

Security outside the conference room stepped in before she could reach the table.

"Ma'am, please sit down."

Her husband stared at her as if seeing a stranger.

"You stole from your own brother?"

"I was going to pay it back!"

"You let us believe Laura was after Aaron's money."

"I had to!"

"You had to?"

Her voice finally broke.

"If Laura stayed close to the family..."

She stopped herself.

Daniel quietly finished the sentence.

"...she would eventually discover the missing funds."

Every person in the room looked at Brooke.

Not with sympathy.

With horror.

Then Daniel reached the final page.

"This," he said softly, "is the part Aaron wanted Laura to hear in person."

He folded the document closed.

"I'm meeting with Mrs. Bennett tomorrow morning."

Brooke rushed forward.

"What else is in there?"

Daniel met her eyes.

"The reason Aaron rewrote his entire trust three weeks before he died."

Her face lost every trace of color.

Because she suddenly understood something terrifying.

The letter everyone had received...

was only the beginning.

Tomorrow...

Laura would learn the one secret Aaron had protected until his final breath.

May you like

And once she did...

there would be no way to stop what came next.
