CHAPTER 6 – THE VIDEO THAT THE WHOLE TOWN SAW

CHAPTER 6 – THE VIDEO THAT THE WHOLE TOWN SAW
At 6:42 the next morning, my phone began vibrating.
Once.
Twice.
Then continuously.
I reached for it, expecting birthday messages for Dad.
Instead, I saw thirty-eight missed notifications.
Friends.
Neighbors.
Former coworkers.
Even people I hadn't spoken to in years.
Every message contained the same sentence.
"Emily... have you seen the video?"
A knot formed in my stomach.
"What video?"
I opened the first message.
A link.
Someone had uploaded footage from inside the cabin.
The camera angle came from near the fireplace.
Hidden.
Professional.
The recording showed everything.
Jessica deliberately tipping the wine.
Jacob's stunned expression.
Dad dropping his wedding ring into the crimson puddle.
The notebook.
The investigators arriving.
The clip ended just before Jessica left with them.
It had already been viewed over two hundred thousand times overnight.
Comments poured in faster than I could read them.
"That poor little boy."
"Who destroys a child's birthday gift?"
"The grandfather is the real hero."
"Protect your children, even from family."
Thousands.
Then tens of thousands.
The video spread across every social media platform.
Dad remained surprisingly calm.
"I wondered how long it would take."
"You knew?"
"I suspected."
Harold examined the footage carefully.
"The angle isn't from any family phone."
"No."
"Someone planted a camera."
Detective Mitchell arrived less than an hour later.
"We've identified it."
She placed several printed photographs on the table.
"The device was hidden inside a decorative clock brought to the cabin yesterday."
Mom frowned.
"Who brought the clock?"
Everyone looked toward the same empty chair.
Jessica.
Laura nodded.
"It appears she intended to record family interactions."
"For what?"
Harold answered before anyone else could.
"Leverage."
"Blackmail."
"Or entertainment."
Laura sighed.
"Perhaps."
"But she didn't expect to record evidence against herself."
Before anyone could process that revelation, another black SUV entered the driveway.
Then another.
Then another.
This time they weren't investigators.
They were reporters.
News vans quickly followed.
Cameras.
Microphones.
Satellite trucks.
Within minutes, the quiet lakeside cabin had become the center of a media storm.
Jacob peeked through the curtains.
"Mom..."
"There are lots of people."
I gently closed the curtain.
"You don't have to talk to any of them."
Dad agreed.
"This ends with us protecting children."
"Not exposing them."
But the biggest surprise came just after noon.
Harold received a phone call.
He listened silently for nearly a minute.
Then smiled.
"They found it."
"What?"
"The original cabin security archive."
Dad stood immediately.
"I thought it was erased."
"So did everyone else."
Harold looked toward Detective Mitchell.
"The backup server survived."
Laura's eyes widened.
"How much footage?"
Harold answered quietly.
"Almost fifteen years."
My heart skipped.
Fifteen years.
That meant birthdays.
Christmases.
Summer vacations.
Every gathering.
Every argument.
Every incident Jessica had insisted never happened.
If the recordings were intact...
The leather notebook would no longer stand alone.
The cameras had been watching all along.
May you like
And somewhere inside fifteen years of forgotten video...
Was the truth no one would ever be able to deny again.
