CHAPTER 4 – THE SECRET BEHIND PAGE FORTY-SEVEN

CHAPTER 4 – THE SECRET BEHIND PAGE FORTY-SEVEN

Jessica's face had turned completely white.

"What do you mean?"

Dad didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he opened the notebook again.

His fingers stopped on one page.

Forty-seven.

The paper looked different.

Older.

Folded more times than the others.

A photograph was tucked inside.

Dad removed it carefully.

Even from across the room I could tell it wasn't another childhood picture.

It was a bank receipt.

Attached to it...

A signature.

Jessica's.

Dated nine years earlier.

Harold inhaled slowly.

"So this is the page."

Dad nodded.

"The page I hoped I'd never have to show."

The lead investigator introduced herself.

"My name is Detective Laura Mitchell."

She wasn't there to arrest anyone.

Not yet.

She simply accepted the notebook from Dad.

"I understand you've decided to release your records."

"I have."

She opened page forty-seven.

The cabin became so quiet that I could hear the pages turning.

Laura studied them for nearly a full minute.

Then she looked directly at Jessica.

"Would you like to explain why your signature appears on withdrawals made from your late grandmother's medical trust?"

Jessica blinked.

"I..."

Mom gasped.

"No..."

Harold closed his eyes.

He already knew.

Dad simply waited.

Jessica laughed nervously.

"Those were authorized."

Laura raised another document.

"By whom?"

"My grandmother."

Laura shook her head.

"According to hospital records..."

She laid another paper beside the first.

"...she was unconscious."

The silence became unbearable.

Memories flashed through my mind.

Grandma's treatments ending suddenly.

The nurses saying funding had become complicated.

Mom insisting insurance was delayed.

Jessica buying a brand-new luxury SUV the very same month.

At the time...

None of us had connected the dots.

Now...

Every piece fit.

Jessica slammed both hands onto the table.

"This has nothing to do with today!"

Dad answered quietly.

"It has everything to do with today."

"You've always believed people couldn't see who you were."

He pointed toward Jacob.

"But today..."

"...you forgot that children grow up."

"And evidence grows older."

Laura continued reading.

"There are also records indicating forged reimbursement requests..."

She turned another page.

"...unauthorized transfers..."

Another.

"...false invoices."

Another.

"...and payments routed through shell companies."

Jessica shook her head violently.

"No."

"No, someone set me up."

Harold spoke for the first time in several minutes.

"I reviewed every transaction myself."

His voice carried disappointment more than anger.

"I spent eight months hoping the numbers were wrong."

"They weren't."

Mom suddenly collapsed into a chair.

"I knew..."

Everyone looked at her.

She buried her face in her hands.

"I knew something wasn't right."

Jessica spun around.

"Mom!"

"You said you'd never tell!"

The room froze.

Jessica realized too late what she'd admitted.

Laura slowly clicked her pen.

"For the record..."

She looked directly at Jessica.

"Would you like to repeat that statement?"

Jessica covered her mouth.

Too late.

Much too late.

Jacob quietly leaned against me.

"Mom..."

"Yes?"

"Is Grandpa mad because Aunt Jessica was mean?"

I kissed his forehead.

"No."

"He is sad because he waited too long to stop someone from being mean."

Dad heard him.

His shoulders sank.

"That's true."

He walked over to Jacob.

Then, in front of everyone...

He picked up the ruined painting.

The paper was wrinkled.

The colors had bled together into a muddy mess.

Most people would have thrown it away.

Dad didn't.

He smiled gently.

"I still want this."

Jacob sniffled.

"It's broken."

Dad shook his head.

"No."

He looked toward Jessica.

"Our family was broken."

Then he looked back at the painting.

"This..."

"...can still be repaired."

Jacob finally cried.

Dad hugged him tightly.

Behind them...

Detective Mitchell quietly closed the notebook.

She looked at Jessica with professional calm.

"Mrs. Carter..."

"I'll need you to come with us for questioning."

Jessica stumbled backward.

"You can't."

"I have lawyers."

Laura nodded.

"You'll certainly want one."

Jessica looked desperately toward Mom.

Then toward me.

Then toward Dad.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

As the investigators stepped closer...

She finally understood something she had never believed possible.

May you like

For the first time in her life...

No one was coming to rescue her.
