CHAPTER 7 — The Truth Beneath the Water

CHAPTER 7 — The Truth Beneath the Water

No one moved.

The silence after Savannah's words was louder than the music had ever been.

Michael's eyes narrowed.

"You don't understand what's happening."

Savannah looked at him with tears running down her face.

"No, Dad. I finally do."

He took a step toward her.

"I did all of this for you."

"For me?"

She laughed bitterly.

"You stole from Aunt Claire."

"You forged documents."

"You lied to Mom."

"You lied to me."

"You let me believe being spoiled made me important."

She pointed toward the pool.

"I threw away the only gift that was actually meant to help me build a future."

Michael's voice hardened.

"You've been manipulated."

Claire finally stepped forward.

"No, Michael."

"You just lost control."

Richard Hayes nodded to two investigators, who quietly moved to either side of Michael.

"We're not finished here, Mr. Lawson."

Michael smirked.

"You don't have enough."

Richard smiled for the first time.

"Actually..."

He opened another folder.

"When Mrs. Lawson agreed to cooperate thirty-two minutes ago, she gave us access to encrypted cloud backups."

Michael's expression froze.

"The recordings..."

"The emails."

"The offshore account passwords."

"The contracts."

"The fake invoices."

Richard looked directly at him.

"You documented your own fraud better than we ever could."

Michael lunged toward Caroline.

"You betrayed me!"

Before he reached her, investigators restrained him.

"Michael Lawson," Richard said calmly, "you are under arrest on suspicion of fraud, forgery, identity theft, money laundering, and conspiracy."

Several guests gasped.

Police vehicles arrived moments later, their lights reflecting across the pool.

Michael was led away in handcuffs.

As he reached the gate, he turned back.

"This family will never forgive you!"

No one answered.

The gate closed behind him.

For the first time in years...

The lies left with him.
