CHAPTER 3 — The Investigators at the Gate

CHAPTER 3 — The Investigators at the Gate
The music died one speaker at a time.
By the time the second black SUV stopped in front of the mansion, every conversation had faded into nervous whispers.
The teenagers stared, confused.
Parents exchanged uneasy glances.
The photographer quietly lowered his camera.
Four people stepped out.
Two wore tailored navy suits.
One carried a leather briefcase.
The last flashed a badge to the security guard.
The guard immediately opened the gate without another question.
Caroline's breathing became shallow.
"No..."
I turned to her.
"You know them."
She shook her head too quickly.
"I've never seen them before."
"Liar."
She grabbed my arm so tightly her manicured nails dug into my skin.
"Claire, please. Don't say anything."
There it was again.
Not anger.
Desperation.
The lead investigator approached us with calm, measured steps.
"Ms. Claire Bennett?"
"Yes."
He handed me a business card.
"My name is Richard Hayes. We're conducting a financial investigation involving several offshore transactions connected to the Bennett Family Trust."
Around us, conversations stopped completely.
People pretended not to listen.
No one fooled anyone.
Richard continued.
"We received notification less than thirty minutes ago that the trust administrator froze all outgoing transfers."
"I gave that instruction."
He nodded.
"It may have prevented another significant withdrawal."
Caroline's face turned ghost white.
Richard slowly looked toward her.
"And you are?"
"My... my name is Caroline Bennett."
For the first time, Richard's expression changed.
Recognition.
"So you're Mrs. Caroline Lawson."
The color drained from every inch of her face.
"My name is Bennett."
"Our records indicate you legally resumed the surname Lawson eighteen months ago."
Silence.
I stared at my sister.
"What did he just say?"
Caroline didn't answer.
Savannah frowned.
"Mom?"
Nothing.
"Mom... what's he talking about?"
Richard opened the folder.
Inside were certified documents.
Marriage certificates.
Corporate filings.
International wire records.
He placed one page in front of Caroline.
"You and Michael Lawson remarried in the Cayman Islands."
My stomach twisted.
"No."
The date glared back at me.
Eighteen months ago.
All this time...
She hadn't been abandoned.
She had secretly reunited with the man she claimed had ruined her life.
Savannah looked between us, completely bewildered.
"You told me Dad disappeared."
Caroline whispered, "Sweetheart..."
"You said he left us!"
"I can explain."
"No," Savannah snapped. "Explain now."
The backyard had become a courtroom.
Every guest watched.
Every phone was recording.
Caroline's perfect image cracked before hundreds of eyes.
Richard spoke again.
"We believe Mr. Lawson has been directing funds from overseas through companies created with forged trust authorizations."
I felt the ground shift beneath me.
"So Michael has been behind this the entire time."
Richard answered carefully.
"We believe he had help."
His eyes settled on Caroline.
She closed hers.
For a brief second, she looked like she might faint.
Instead...
She whispered four words.
May you like
"I didn't mean this."
Then she burst into tears.
