CHAPTER 7 — The Truth Elena Left Behind

CHAPTER 7 — The Truth Elena Left Behind
The envelope remained unopened for nearly a minute.
Daniel laid it on the dining room table between us.
Outside, reporters crowded behind the estate gates, convinced the biggest headline had already happened.
They were wrong.
I broke the seal.
Inside was a laboratory report.
The anonymous hair recovered from Valeria's apartment belonged to...
Nina Alvarez.
The name meant nothing to me.
But Daniel immediately recognized it.
He closed his eyes.
"I was afraid of this."
"Who is she?"
He took a slow breath.
"Nina was Elena's private maternity nurse during the last month of her pregnancy."
I looked up sharply.
"The same nurse who resigned two days before Elena went into labor?"
Daniel nodded.
"She disappeared after the funeral."
Detectives located Nina forty-eight hours later in a small coastal town in Oregon.
She agreed to return voluntarily.
When she entered the interview room, she looked older than her forty years.
Not because of age.
Because of guilt.
She began crying before anyone asked the first question.
"I never wanted anyone to die."
Those were her first words.
Then the truth came out.
Months before Elena gave birth, Valeria had approached Nina through a staffing agency.
At first, it seemed harmless.
She simply wanted information.
What flowers Elena liked.
Which charities she supported.
What time Alejandro usually came home.
Gradually the questions became more personal.
What medication Elena took.
How often she saw her doctor.
Who handled the family's legal documents.
Nina admitted she answered many of those questions.
She thought she was helping someone plan a charity surprise for a grieving family.
Only later did she realize she had unknowingly helped Valeria build a detailed map of our lives.
Detectives asked the question everyone feared.
"Did Valeria cause Elena's death?"
Nina shook her head firmly.
"No."
Medical experts reviewed the entire case again.
The conclusion remained unchanged.
Elena had died from a rare and catastrophic childbirth complication that no evidence suggested had been intentionally caused.
I closed my eyes.
The grief remained.
But one terrible doubt disappeared forever.
Valeria had exploited tragedy.
She had not created it.
There was a painful difference.
That evening I walked into the nursery.
Leo reached up immediately.
Matthew laughed as Rosita bounced him gently.
For months I had been haunted by one impossible question.
Could I have saved Elena?
Now I finally had the answer.
No.
But I could still save the future she wanted for our sons.
The following week the grand jury indicted Valeria on multiple felony counts.
Financial fraud.
Forgery.
Identity theft.
Extortion.
Witness intimidation.
Evidence tampering.
As investigators continued reviewing her records, four additional victims came forward.
Each told nearly the same story.
Kindness.
Trust.
Isolation.

Manipulation.
By the time the indictment became public, the carefully crafted image Valeria had spent years building had completely collapsed.
