CHAPTER 6 — The Woman Who Played Everyone

CHAPTER 6 — The Woman Who Played Everyone

The interrogation room was cold enough to make everyone uncomfortable.

Adrian Keller looked nothing like the confident man in the photographs.

His expensive suit was wrinkled.

Dark circles framed his eyes.

Fear had replaced charm.

He slid a folder across the table.

"I want immunity."

Detective Harris didn't touch it.

"Start talking."

Adrian nodded.

"I wasn't the only one."

Inside the folder were photographs.

Not two.

Not three.

Seven different wealthy men.

Each from a different city.

Chicago.

Dallas.

Miami.

Seattle.

Boston.

Los Angeles.

And me.

Every photograph showed Valeria smiling beside them.

Every one had been taken within the last five years.

"She staggered the relationships," Adrian explained.

"Some overlapped by months."

"Did they know about each other?"

"No."

"Did you?"

"I found out too late."

He laughed bitterly.

"I thought I was helping her."

Helping.

The word sounded absurd now.

Adrian admitted everything.

Valeria convinced him he was investing in luxury real estate.

Instead...

He opened shell companies.

Moved money.

Signed contracts.

Never asking enough questions.

"When did you realize?"

"When she asked me to prepare fake guardianship documents."

My heart skipped.

"The twins?"

He nodded.

"That's when I walked away."

"But you still booked Santorini."

He lowered his head.

"She said if I disappeared for two weeks..."

"...she'd pay me three million dollars."

Detectives exchanged glances.

Three million.

Enough money to buy silence.

Enough money to disappear.

Enough money to start over.

Unless someone refused.

Meanwhile, forensic accountants completed another review of Valeria's laptop.

Buried beneath encrypted files was a spreadsheet.

Each victim had a status.

Contacted.

Dating.

Engaged.

Assets Pending.

Beside my name appeared one final note.

Wedding delayed by children.

Daniel stared at the screen in disbelief.

Not husband.

Not family.

Not love.

Children.

The twins had been listed as an obstacle.

Nothing more.

That afternoon, the district attorney approved multiple felony charges.

Financial fraud.

Forgery.

Identity theft.

Extortion.

Witness intimidation.

Attempted exploitation of vulnerable adults.

Investigators believed additional charges would follow as more victims came forward.

When officers informed Valeria, she asked only one question.

"Has Alejandro said anything about me?"

The detective answered honestly.

"No."

She looked genuinely surprised.

People like Valeria expected anger.

Negotiation.

Attention.

Instead...

She received silence.

Three days later, news of the case spread across national media.

Reporters camped outside the estate.

Television helicopters circled overhead.

Every network wanted an interview.

I declined them all.

The story wasn't about me.

It wasn't even about Valeria.

It was about two little boys who deserved a peaceful childhood.

And one young caregiver who had risked everything to protect them.

That evening, I found Rosita planting white roses beneath the nursery window.

"For Elena," she said softly.

I knelt beside her.

"She would have loved these."

Rosita smiled through tears.

"I never met her."

"No."

I looked toward the window where Leo and Matthew were laughing inside.

"But somehow..."

"...you kept the promise she asked of everyone who loved them."

Neither of us noticed Daniel walking toward us until he spoke.

"The DNA results just arrived."

I frowned.

"What DNA results?"

He held up a sealed envelope.

"The anonymous hair recovered from Valeria's apartment."

"Whose is it?"

Daniel looked directly at me.

May you like

"I think..."

"...you're about to discover this case started long before Valeria ever entered your life."
