CHAPTER 4 — THE PRICE OF BETRAYAL

CHAPTER 4 — THE PRICE OF BETRAYAL

Within three minutes, the hospital transformed.

Administrators appeared from nowhere.

The billing department personally processed the authorization.

The chief neonatal surgeon, who had been scheduled to leave for another hospital, canceled his departure.

An elite pediatric cardiac specialist was called back from JFK Airport.

Operating Room Three was prepared.

Not because James demanded it.

Because he quietly paid for every resource before anyone could say no.

Claire watched in disbelief.

The same hospital that had spoken about policies and paperwork was now moving with breathtaking speed.

Dr. Sutherland approached James.

"We're ready."

James nodded.

"Go."

The doctors disappeared through the double doors.

The red OPERATING light switched on.

Claire's legs gave out.

Before she hit the floor...

James caught her.

Exactly as he had years ago when she slipped on an icy Brooklyn sidewalk during their first winter together.

Some instincts never disappeared.

He helped her sit.

Neither mentioned it.

Across the hallway...

Derek's phone vibrated.

He ignored it.

Then again.

Again.

Again.

Finally he answered.

"What?"

His face slowly lost all color.

"What do you mean... frozen?"

Silence.

"No, that's impossible."

Another silence.

"You've got the wrong account."

His voice became louder.

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN EVERY ACCOUNT?"

He hung up.

Immediately another call came.

Then another.

His casino lender.

His bank.

His financial advisor.

Everything was collapsing.

He stared at James.

"You..."

James looked genuinely confused.

"Me?"

"You did this."

James calmly replied,

"I've been here for seven minutes."

"You froze my accounts!"

"I don't even know your accounts."

Derek clenched his fists.

"You're lying."

James's chief legal counsel, who had just arrived, quietly stepped beside him.

"Sir."

James looked over.

The lawyer spoke softly enough that only James heard.

"Our investigators confirmed something."

James listened.

His expression changed.

Slowly.

Dangerously.

"What?"

"The mortgage documents."

"They contain evidence of forgery."

James looked toward Derek.

The lawyer continued,

"The signature belonging to Ms. Claire Walsh appears to have been falsified."

Claire looked up.

"What?"

The lawyer turned respectfully toward her.

"We've already requested certified copies from the county recorder."

Claire's breathing stopped.

"How..."

James answered quietly.

"When someone hurts people I care about..."

"I make sure I know exactly who they are."

Derek stepped backward.

"You investigated me?"

James never denied it.

"I started the day I learned Claire married you."

Claire stared at him.

"You..."

James finally looked at her.

"I promised myself that if you were happy..."

"...I would never interfere."

His voice was steady.

"But if anyone ever made you cry..."

He looked back at Derek.

"...I would."

At that exact moment, two detectives walked into the hospital carrying folders.

One asked loudly,

"Mr. Derek Walsh?"

Every head in the hallway turned.

Derek swallowed.

"Why?"

"We need to ask you several questions regarding mortgage fraud, financial misrepresentation, and allegations connected to illegal gambling debts."

The hallway fell silent.

Claire covered her mouth.

She hadn't called the police.

James hadn't either.

The detectives continued,

"We also have a warrant to secure financial records connected to transactions made over the past twenty-four months."

Derek slowly realized the nightmare had only begun.

Because everything he had hidden from his wife...

Was about to become evidence.

And behind the operating room doors—

their tiny daughter was still fighting for every heartbeat, while outside, the man who had abandoned her was watching his own life collapse piece by piece.
